About Your Teacher
Hopefully by now you all know a bit
about me. However, I would like to give
you some more information about my
role in class this semester and why Im
here.
I have been a part of a graduate program
at The U of A called Teach Arizona since
May. One aspect of the program is to
facilitate a full school-year internship in
our desired subject area. Thats why Im
here!
This semester, as a part of my internship,
I will be acting as your primary
instructor. Dont worry, Slaughter will be
acting as a supervisor and will be in the
class with me everyday.
Lets have a GREAT semester!

There were a billion lights out there on the horizon and I knew that all
of them put together weren't enough to light the darkness in the hearts
of some men. M.C.
Semester Overview
So far in the course you have explored dark romantic and gothic
literature by asking yourselves questions like, What are the
consequences of loss? and What will people do to feel accepted and
societally connected?. This semester we will be focusing on the issue of
power. You will be reading stories by Nathanial Hawthorne, Mary
Shelley, and Robert Louis Stevenson and researching famous serial
killers and psychopaths like Jack the Ripper. You will also write fairy
tales inspired by the creepy tales by The Grimm Brothers. Finally, we
will finish the semester by sharing personal speeches.
Essential Questions
How much POWER is too much?
What is POWER?
Additional Inquiries
How is POWER obtained? Is it ever at a cost? Who decides the
amount of POWER that is appropriate? What happens when there is
an imbalance or abuse of POWER?
