The Art of Teaching Medical Technology
To begin with my argument about how teaching Medical Technology is an art, let me first
start by saying that I believe teaching, in its simplest sense, no matter what subject or course,
is an art. It entails the employment of the senses for the teacher to recognize which method of
teaching appeals to the students the most, just as an artist chooses which medium to use in
order to convey effectively his/her message to his/her audience. In The Educational
Imagination by Elliot Eisner, he said that, Teaching can be performed with such skill and
grace that, for the student as for the teacher, the experience can be justifiably characterized
as aesthetic. Teaching in itself is a creative act, in which there is a variety of both the subject
or message, and variety of delivery. According to a Rice blog archive (circulations at Yale and
Harvard) by Josh Eyler, Outstanding teaching is primarily about creating the conditions in
which our students can learn most effectively, and that is where I think the art truly comes in
when the artist(teacher) creates the conditions in which the students learn effectively, which
a scientific, objective teaching can simply overlook, as stated in Eisners On The Art Of
Teaching, Teaching is an art in the sense that the teacher's activity is not dominated by
prescriptions or routines but is influenced by qualities and contingencies that are
unpredicted. While teaching does entail following a well-calculated syllabus, a factor that may
count teaching into a science, its fluidity when the application of the knowledge sets in is what
truly counts, or as Makedon put it, Effective teaching can be seen as the art of applying
education research. Ultimately, the systematic and objective method that is demanded from
educators can be seen as only a minimal part of a much bigger artistic process, a process in
which, if successful, there is an exchange of knowledge with the proper awareness of when,
where, and how to use it; A process whose success is dependent on the knowledges creative
and unique delivery to appeal to equally unique and diverse students.
