The First Seminole War and the

Adam-Onis Treaty

The First Seminole War

Americans had conflicts with
the Seminole people who
would help runaway slaves to
escape into Florida. While the
U.S. was fighting the War of
1812, there was a series of
battles in Florida between
Major General Andrew
Jackson and the U.S. army,
and the Seminole people.
Seminole War:
The First Seminole War erupted
over forays staged by U.S.
authorities to recapture runaway
black slaves living among Seminole
bands, who stiffly resisted. In 1818,
Major General Andrew Jackson
was dispatched with an army of
more than 3,000 soldiers to Florida
to punish the Seminole.

The Adam-Onis Treaty ceded Spanish Florida to the United States, and
was signed by secretary of state, John Quincy Adams, and Luis de Onis,
the Spanish ambassador, on February 22, 1819.
Adam-Onis Treaty:
The Spanish were not pleased with the treaty and delayed ratification while hoping to gain
support from fellow European powers. None was forthcoming and after King Ferdinand was
reduced to a constitutional monarch in 1820, Spain approved the treaty.
