Dear Minister;
I am writing today to commend you on your decision to request the Public Prosecution Service
of Canada to represent the Crown in the trials involving former staffers of the Premiers office,
David Livingstone and Laura Miller.
This decision serves to mitigate clouds of suspicion that may have been otherwise overcast on
the proceedings for a public that is eager to see justice take its course.
I would suggest that this example be followed with further supporting initiatives, such as
ensuring that in the future, investigations of cases involving government officials and
representatives be handed over to investigative bodies that are not subordinate to those they
are investigating, and that we amend legislation to ensure that this is not left to the discretion
of the government, but that it is obligatory.
Recent lengthy investigations into government activities have brought the OPP under scrutiny
and rumours of distrust among the public; there is a significant element among the electorate
that do not feel that justice can be properly served by what appear to be internal
investigations. Removing that veil of skepticism, doubt and suspicion from such investigations
would help to renew public trust in our institutions.
I would be happy to discuss some of these ideas with you further at a time that is mutually
convenient.
Sincerely,

Randy Hillier
