Students previous knowledge:
1. Students have learnt about the present continuous tense.
2. Students have learnt about the past tense.
Language functions:
1. Use the past continuous tense to talk about an action that was happening at a
past time.
2. Use the past continuous tense to talk about what was happening when
another action took place.
3. Use the past tense to express a short action that happens in the middle of the
progressive action.
Language forms:
1. Wh-questions, e.g. What were you doing at 8:00 am this morning? Who was
talking when the teacher came in?
2. Yes/ No questions, e.g. Was he having his lunch when you arrived? No, he
wasnt. He was listening to music when I arrived.
3. Use the past continuous tense to talk about what was happening when
another action took place and the past tense to express a short action that
happens in the middle of the progressive action, e.g. I was watching
television when you phoned me.
Objectives:
1. Students should be able to distinguish the use of the past tense and past
continuous tense.
2. Students should be able to use the past continuous tense and the past tense
correctly.

1. Ask Ss what they did yesterday, what they
were doing at a certain time yesterday, and
what they were doing now

2. Distribute the Worksheet (Appendix 1) to Ss
3. Explain clearly to Ss the rules in using past
continuous and how the past continuous
tense is formed.
4. Ask Ss to finish the exercise on the
worksheet. Walk around to give help if
necessary.
