REACTION: This was the first time I ever thought about someone's ability to fail as being positive,
something that was worked for and achieved. Thinking about this story in particular, I equate the
learning of a different language to losing one?s culture, and an extension of that, their identity.
Especially if they have left their homeland and will not be returning.

CONNECTIONS: This personal story reminds me of a personal story in my family. My grandmother is of
Mexican heritage, and she married a white man. Once having children, my grandmother refused to
teacher her children English, because she wanted her children to be as "White" as possible, totally
renouncing her past culture, one she was ashamed of and wanted to distance herself from. In doing
this, she made the choice of which culture her children would have to be.

QUESTION: I question the legality of this action, and hope this story isn't true. This is truly
heartbreaking that school officials could ever do this and it be considered okay! If someone has done
the work to earn something, you have to give it to them, personal feelings aside. This is strictly
business, the school officials can't expect every student to be perfect.

The ability to have open discussions about real world, real time issues is something I think all teachers
strive for, at least History teachers anyways. I want to have the ability and flexibility in my classroom to
go over all the mandatory standards, as well as address things that is important to my students. I saw
this first hand in my internship this semester because of the national scandal that broke out. The entire
school took that day to talk and work through the issues students were having, and I think that was the
best option and helped the students bounce back a little bit faster

RESTATEMENTS: This obviously the giant takeaway from the author, and his call to arms. I like this as
a restatement because it allows me to reflect on the entire article and form my opinion. I found this to
be somewhat similar to "Growing Roses in Concrete" in a way because of the not being afraid to be
real and upfront with students. In doing so, you will get the most out of them because in a sense they
will respect you.
