Fight Depression With Exergames
It can be a vicious cycle:
Depression can cause a lack of interest
in physical activity, yet physical
activity can help alleviate depression.
How do we motivate ourselves to
be active when we just don’t want
to? There might be a solution right
in our nearest electronics store: The
Nintendo Wii games.
The Nintendo Wii Sports was
designed to get young people up off
the floor -- where they sit with remote
controls in their hands -- and get them
doing something physically active.
However, a new study has shown that
the very same games can help seniors
become more active.
The University of California
San Diego School of Medicine used
the Wii Sports games (golf, boxing,
tennis, bowling and baseball) on
test participants. One-third of them
reported that their depression was at
least 50 percent better by the end of
the study.
Nintendo also has a Wii Fit
Plus package, and it’s much more
comprehensive than the basic Sports.
It lets you weigh in, take body fitness
tests, record your results, tells you
how many calories you’re burning
and lets you customize your own
workout, including exercise you’ve
done away from the Wii. The game
includes balance, strength, yoga,
aerobics and training.
Think of the positives: You get
to do it indoors, so weather isn’t a
factor. You play with others. It has a
one-time cost. It’s fun.
There is another potential benefit
to the Wii games, specifically tennis
and Cooking Mama: A very short
study showed that those who’ve
had a stroke were able to cut the
amount of time it takes to do everyday
activities after playing the Wii
games.
Ask your doctor if he or she
thinks the exercise games in Wii
would benefit you. And then, ask your
local seniors center if they’ll purchase
one for group use!

History was never one of my
favorite subjects in school, but as
a “more mature” adult that has
changed tremendously. Working for
the largest indoor antique market in
the world has opened the door to new
adventures and given me a whole new
perspective on history as well as life.
As with all antiques, there’s history
and always an interesting story
behind the item as explained by the
many well-versed vendors. Working
with antique vendors from all over
the world is one of best experiences
anyone could ever encounter.
Walking through the antique
market is like taking a stroll through
one of the largest history books in
the world. In every booth a buyer
can find something from every era
and every corner of the world. For
example, during the Ohio Scott
Antique Markets I found a treasure-
trove of postcards on covered bridges
that was so helpful in my research of
that subject. Who would have thought
there would be so much history in
covered bridges? And who would
have thought it would be found at an
antique show?
Although the first covered bridge
in the United States was built in 1804,
covered bridges date back to 780 B.C.
in ancient Babylon. As you can see,
the history is phenomenal. According
to records, there were at one time
almost 14,000 wooden covered
bridges in the United States alone. Of
course today, that number is greatly
diminished. Pennsylvania leads all
other states with approximately 220
covered bridges today with Ohio
running a close second in numbers.
At one time there were approximately
3,500 covered bridges in Ohio. Today
that number is down to a little over
140 throughout its 88 counties.
Most covered bridges built in the
U.S. were constructed between 1825
and 1875. The bridges were covered
to preserve the wooden framing from
the snow and ice of harsh winters and
rainy seasons. Some believe these
covered bridges made safe havens
for weary travelers on stormy nights
while others say they were used for
political rallies, religious meetings,
town meetings, poker parties, dances,
luncheons and an occasional place for
loved ones to rendezvous. And others
say it was to keep the horses from
being spooked by rolling streams and
rivers below. Whatever the reasons
may have been, it was discovered
that a covered bridge would last 100
years or longer versus 20 years of an
uncovered bridge.
The following information on
Ohio’s covered bridges was obtained
from the enormous stack of postcards
purchased at the Ohio Scott Antique
Market. These postcards not only
give the history of the bridge, but also
show the beauty of the state. This is
one history lesson that is well worth
reading. The oldest known covered
bridge in Ohio was built in 1829 in
Preble County. The only double-
barreled covered bridge in Ohio
was built by Orlistus Roberts and
spanned 90 feet across Seven Mile
Creek. Unfortunately, the bridge was
destroyed by fire in 1986. However,
the bridge was renovated at the cost of
over $150,000 and is now located in
the city park of the town of Eaton.
The second oldest covered
bridge in Ohio is located in Trumbull
County in the town of Newton Falls.
The bridge, constructed in 1831, is the
only bridge with a covered sidewalk.
The sidewalk was added in 1921 for
the safety of students walking to and
from school. The bridge that crosses
the East Branch of the Mahoning
River is the only covered bridge
remaining in Trumbull County.
The Newton Falls bridge spans 117
feet long and is listed on the U.S.
Department of the Interior’s National
Register of Historic Places.
The shortest covered bridge in
the U.S. and possibly the world is
located in Columbiana County. The
bridge, just a mere 19 feet, three inches
long, is known as the Churchill Road
Bridge. According to the postcard this
covered bridge is located in a small
county park in Lisbon, Ohio and was
built in 1870. However, beginning
early this year, this title will be taken
away from Columbiana County.
Ashtabula County will be home to
the nation’s shortest bridge once
construction has been completed on
the 18-foot replacement of the West
Liberty Street Bridge on Route 534.
The second longest covered
bridge in the U.S. was destroyed by
fire in 1958. Old Conesville covered
bridge spanned the Muskingum River
for 83 years between Coshocton and
Zanesville, just seven miles north of
Dresden. The bridge, built in 1875,
was 400 feet in length. Ashtabula
County now holds the record for
the nation’s longest covered bridge
surpassing the previous record holder
(450 feet) across the Connecticut
River in New Hampshire. The
Ashtabula bridge is 613 feet long and
cost $8 million. Ashtabula County
now has 17 covered bridges, soon to
have 18 once the Route 534 Bridge
is completed.
Germantown, Ohio boasts the
one and only of its kind covered
bridge. Located in Montgomery
County, this covered bridge is said
to be the only inverted bowstring
suspension covered bridge in the
country. Built in 1870, the bridge was
restored in 1963. While the residents
of Germantown believe they have
the one and only of its kind, they
may have competition for this title. A
covered bridge located on the campus
of Ohio University-Lancaster also
claims title to a six-panel, inverted
bowstring truss bridge which was

relocated to the campus in 1988. This
bridge was originally built in 1881 by
Augustus Borneman and crossed over
Poplar Creek near Carroll.
Fairfield County, Bloom/
Greenfield Township is home to the
only covered bridge in Ohio that is
located next to the site of an original
mill. Located at the upper falls of the
Hocking River, Rock Mill Bridge was
built in 1901 by Jacob “Blue Jeans”
Brandt. According to Dave Fey of
Fairfield County Historical Parks,
Fairfield County has more “original”
covered bridges than any other county
in Ohio.
Records reveal there were more
than 2,000 covered bridges in Ohio
before 1920. While many of these
have diminished over the years
due to weather, flooding or lack of
preventative maintenance, there are
still a lot of these magnificent beauties
around the state.

“It’s just so fascinating to
see the history unfold from these
postcards,” said Doris. Even if you
aren’t interested in history, it’s a real
treat just to sit and thumb through the
thousands of postcards.

Women have gone from training
bras to sports bras to burning bras
and today, the brassiere is often worn
on the outside of a garment. Bras no
longer are considered "under" wear,
largely due to trendsetting pop idols,
J-Lo and Beyonce, not to mention
Lady Gaga.
Even Elizabeth, Queen of
England, wears a brassiere; not
just any old bra, of course, but one
designed and made by Rigby &
Peller, to whom she granted her Royal
Warrant as Official Corsetieres in
1960. I wonder if they also design
her hats.
In 2010, we're dealing with
the syndrome of looking as though
we're not wearing a bra at all. "Sex
and the City" introduced the Nipple
Enhancer, a "bodyperk," which gives
people everywhere the illusion that
the wearer is constantly standing on
a drafty iceberg. We've come a long
way, baby. Or have we?
Not to worry, dear reader. The

Managing Your Emotions AN ODE TO golfers
on the Golf Course go green

I am a really lucky person. I
absolutely love the game of golf,
and "bad shots" just don't get to me
in the way that they do a lot of other
golfers. To me, when that ball ends up
tucked under the rim of a sand trap,
or right up behind a tree trunk, I am
provided with an opportunity to be
creative; I relish the opportunity to try
something new on the golf course and
then just watch what "pops out".
I guess that I'm lucky in that the
score doesn't matter to me. I'm not
playing golf to earn enough money to
feed the family or pay the mortgage.
I play golf because I enjoy golf, and
everything which goes with it - the
friends you make, the scenery, the
fresh air, the exercise. The majority
of golfers are in a similar position in
that their livelihood does not depend
upon them holing out on the 18th for
a birdie.
Not all club golfers, however,
enjoy their "bad shots" or respond to
them in a positive manner. Somehow,
a fear of embarrassment or a
competitive nature can get in the way
of true enjoyment of the game. I'm not
denying that golf throws up many an
opportunity for frustration; the game
of golf is extremely challenging to
one's emotional stability!
If you are a beginner at golf, it
helps to recognize that it is a really
tricky game to play involving a long
club, a small ball and a really large
distance to cover. Don't worry about
what other people think; those other
golfers started off in exactly the same
place as you. They understand how
that club can seem to turn itself into
an octopus in your hands and how that
ball can get all stubborn and refuse to
move in the right direction (if indeed
it decides to move at all).
And remember that you do get
better at golf with practice so do
not be disheartened. Whenever you
go to the range or play a few holes
there are always a few lovely shots
which "pop out"; replay these in your
mind's eye and enjoy the feeling of
accomplishment over and over again.

Please don't allow your
shoulders to slump and your gaze to
just contemplate the grass upon the
fairway. Your body language reflects
your moods and emotions. When you
feel down, everything about your
body language heads south. Square
your shoulders, raise your eyes and
enjoy the beauty of the golf course;
laugh with your friends, and know
that this is just a tricky little game
which is going to get easier and easier
with practice, so long as you don't
worry about it. Just as your moods
are reflected in your body language,
as you consciously lift your eyes
and shoulders up, this will have a
reciprocal effect upon your emotions.
Always keep your head high when
playing golf. Keep your head up and
feel uplifted; allow your head to stay
down and you will feel down.
The other thing that is really
helpful is to not forget the task in
hand. The aim of the game is to hit the
ball with the clubface and move that
ball forwards in the right direction. As
a beginner it can be really complicated
trying to remember how you are
meant to stand, and how your hands
are meant to go, and each movement
in the swing, and how far to stand
from the ball, and how high to tee the
ball up...and all too easy to forget that
all you need to do is to aim in the right
direction and then hit the ball!
Golf is a really unique game and
well worth the trials and tribulations
encountered in its learning. What
other game can you play on your
own as well as with others, in groups
of two, three or four? And players
of all levels can play together
without an individual's game being
compromised? And people of almost
any fitness level and age can enjoy?
And be outside in the fresh air? And
play on different courses all over the
globe? I could go on and on about
the beauty of this game but think I've
probably said enough! This is a very
GREAT game. Enjoy your golf!

selection is a mystery somewhat
akin to nuclear fusion. It need not be

experienced can master club selection
in no time at all.
As you might have noticed, each
club has a certain angle or loft to it.
Starting with a #3 iron, a club with
the least amount of loft hits the ball
the furthest. And so it goes down the
line of irons to the 9 iron and pitching
wedge. The higher the loft, the shorter
the ball will travel and the more back
spin the club will produce. The shorter
clubs, or clubs with the most loft are
used for shorter or pitching shots.
The make club selection as
simple as possible, lets take a look at
the basics. The most important factor
is the distance you need to hit the ball.
Let’s say you’re on a tee with 150
yards to the hole. Most golfers would
probably pull out an 8 or 9 iron for this
shot and swing away and land the ball
somewhere near the green. To make
this happen, all you need to do is hit a
couple hundred balls off the practice
tee and see what the distance is for
each club you hit. Make a note of the
average yardage and take it with you
on the course. Use this for a reference
on the fairway for specific distances
to the green.
To select the proper club, there
are a few considerations you need to
follow. Wind direction, lie, distance to
the pin, (green), your hitting abilities
and confidence you have with the
individual clubs. If you’re hitting into
a 30 mph head wind you might want
to increase your normal club by one,
i.e., from an 8 iron to a 7 iron. Just

Several years ago the
golf club was supposedly
revolutionized by making the
shaft out of graphic materials. It
was to give the golfer the edge
by making the shaft more flexible
and having more control over the
club. Within recent years, however,
the steel shaft has made a dramatic
comeback, and most of today’s clubs
now feature steel shafts with excellent
flex and stiffness contributing to club
and ball control.
Of all the features the modern
golfer should pay attention to is the
design of the club head. Dramatic
improvements have been made to
make the club swing through the
ball and allowing the proper follow
through. Club heads are now designed
in several styles which gives the club
a different feel all its own.
Today’s clubs have many features
that make hitting that long ball much
easier and more accurate. Most clubs
heads are known as a “cavity back”,
and features a perimeter-weighted
edge to the club. This gives the club
more weight around the outside edges
of the club head to produce a larger
sweet spot.
Another feature that makes a
more accurate hitting club is the
irons to help produce a lower,
flatter trajectory.
Grooves or scoring lines
add spin and control to the ball’s
flight. An iron with no grooves
causes the ball to “squirt” off
the face. Backspin may decrease
distance slightly but greatly
enhances control.
Lie is the angle of the sole

places the heel of the club in
the air, while too upright a lie

Lilly Pad

Everybody called him Cowboy.
As a little boy he would wear his toy
six-shooter and ride his imaginary
horse as he chased the bad guys out
of town. Cowboy was a good man and
he was my father-in-law.
When I married into Cowboy’s
family he was still working in the
steel mill. A part of the “greatest
generation” he was hard working,
honest, and loyal to a fault. You could
always count on Cowboy to tell a
joke or a funny story and he was the
sort of fellow who could make fun of
you and you really didn’t mind at all.
And Cowboy loved golf. While still
employed, he played whenever and
wherever he could. Upon retirement
he played golf everyday, weather
permitting, and tournaments as often
as possible. He was serious about the
game and spoke the language of golf
with reverence and awe. He thought
he had seen it all in the game of golf
– then I come into his life and onto
his hallowed golf course. For Cowboy
golf was never the same.
To his golf world of single digit
handicaps, tournament victories
and top of the line equipment, I
brought scores too high to calculate,
a swing much like a rusty gate, and
clubs hastily bought during a “blue-
light” special. Nevertheless, Cowboy
welcomed me with opened arms and
immediately took me under his wing.
His first goal had to be keeping me
from hurting anyone. My objective
was to learn to play well enough that
I would not be an embarrassment to
him. I eventually reached my goal
before Cowboy went to that great
golf course in the sky. The following
are three of my favorite golf stories
involving Cowboy; and they are
lovingly dedicated to his memory.
When your daughter marries a

of those challenges manifested while
golfing with me. Early in my marriage
to his daughter he finally mustered up
enough courage to take me to his home
golf course. Knowing I was a super
novice he carefully chose to go at a
time when none of his golfing buddies
were around. This was great wisdom
on his part. An hour and a half into
the front nine we were on a long par
5 still over 200 yards from the green.
I was about to hit my tenth shot when
Cowboy looked me straight in the eye
and said very matter of factly, “Son,
I think there just might be something
to your religion.” I was so blessed
that he was obviously about to see
the light. I responded, “Why’s that
Cowboy?” Then he hit me with the
truth, “Any man who golfs that bad
and doesn’t cuss has something out
of this world!” Three things worth
noting: he was right, he did eventually
see the True Light, and thank God I’m
not that bad anymore.
Cowboy came to visit us at our
home in Virginia Beach. Ever the
gracious host and son-in-law, I took
him golfing. We went to a short, nine
hole municipal course nestled among
residential houses. Property owners
were accustomed to an occasional
golf ball finding its way into their
yard. Needless to say I lost more
than a few golf balls in a few yards.
After playing nine holes and gulping
down a couple of clubhouse hot dogs,
Cowboy suggested playing another
nine. When we walked into the tee
box for the second hole two children
were playing in their fenced-in yard
about 40 yards ahead and 20 yards to
the right. When I began to tee up my
ball they started screaming, “Mommy,
mommy that man’s back!” The
mother came to the door of the patio
and frantically ordered them saying
“Hurry up and get in the house where
it’s safe!” Cowboy told everybody he pastor. He was my favorite golfing

back to the Steubenville, Ohio area I
experienced my most embarrassing
moment with Cowboy. My personal
pastor and I went to golf at Cowboy’s
home course. I was certain we would
miss Cowboy because he always
golfed with the early crowd and it
was close to noon. As we walked in
to pay, Cowboy and a dozen or so of
his beloved “geriatric gang” were just
coming out. Immediately he told his
buddies, “Hey this is the son-in-law I
was telling you about – the preacher
who can’t golf at all. You guys gotta
go with me to the first tee and watch

50 yards into the woods.
Amidst the laughter I put
down a second ball and
proceeded to dribble it
straight about 30 feet off
the tee box. Cowboy gave
me a hug, patted me on the
back and said, “Thanks for
letting us have fun with
you. I knew you could take
it.” Those were the kindest
and most meaningful words
he ever spoke to me.
As time went on I
achieved my goal of being
able to golf with Cowboy
without embarrassing either
of us. He actually bragged
on me a few times. He even
gave his heart to the Lord
and permitted me to be his

The Benefits of the Long
Term Care Insurance
Partnership Policy
It has been two years since the
Long Term Care Insurance Partnership
Program came to Ohio. Although
there was quite a bit of promotion
at the time, there was some
confusion among consumers as
to the benefits of the partnership
program over traditional long term
care insurance.
Paying for a nursing home,
assisted living facility or home health
care can be very expensive. After
exhausting their own funds, patients
look to Medicaid to help them pay the
costs of long term care. To qualify for
Medicaid an individual must reduce
his assets to less than $1,500. Once on
Medicaid, all monthly income will go
to the individual’s care except a small
personal allowance ($40 per month
for most nursing home patients).
When a Medicaid recipient passes
away, the state will seek to recover
the costs paid for medical care from
the individual’s estate.
Long term care insurance pays a
specified daily rate toward the cost of
care in a nursing home, assisted living
facility or at home. The patient must
meet a specified level of care and
generally will have paid privately for
a specified elimination period before
payments start. Once payments start,
the policy will pay for a specified
period of time and up to a specified
dollar amount. Policies vary widely as
to the length of the elimination period,
the daily rate, the length of time the
policy will pay and the total amount
that the policy will cover.

the insurance industry and the state,

month and our pallets turn to lighter
fresher foods, whatever shall we
cook? The possibilities are endless
as grocery stores are stocking up on a
vast selection of farm fresh fruits and
vegetables as they come into season.
You can find every kind of meat or
fish to fill all of your grilling dreams
and strawberries and shortcake have
never been in such abundance.
Perhaps you don’t feel like
cooking? No problem, local restaurants
stand ready to offer you the latest in
grilled meats, market sandwiches and
fabulous salads chock full of light,
colorful, healthy stuff.
Need a refreshing cold beverage?
Even an avid “hot coffee” lover like
me can’t wait for the thermometer to
climb over 50 so I can run down to my
nearest Sheetz for a frozen latte.
The human body is an amazing
machine to which no computer
can rival. I hope whatever that
little “thingamagig,” “dumahicky,”
“microchipthingy” is in our bodies
that says, “Hey its hot out here, how
about a light dinner or better yet, a
trip to Dairy Queen,” never stops
working.
Following are some recipes
perfectly suited for warmer weather
so read on... but please excuse me for
a few minutes as I run to Sheetz

Fresh Tomato Pie
1 ½ cups soft bread crumbs
1 medium onion thinly sliced
4-5 fresh tomatoes, peeled and
sliced
1 cup grated cheese (your
choice)
2 eggs
Salt & pepper to taste
2 tbsp. real bacon bits
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Butter a 9 inch pie pan. Cover bottom
and sides with one cup of the bread
crumbs. Fill pie pan with alternating
layers of the tomatoes, onions, bacon
bits and cheese. Beat the 2 eggs, add
the salt & pepper and pour over layers.
Sprinkle with the remaining bread
crumbs and bake for 45 minutes or
until crumbs are slightly browned.

w/ Asparagus
Lemon Cream Penne w/
Asparagus
Nothing screams spring like
fresh asparagus and this recipe is light
and healthy!
1 tsp. olive oil
1 lb. asparagus, trimmed and cut
into 1 inch diagonal pieces
2 bunches scallions, trimmed
and cut into 1 inch diagonal pieces
¾ cup part-skim ricotta cheese
2 tsps. fresh grated lemon zest
12 ozs. Penne
Salt & pepper to taste
¼ cup slivered fresh basil
Put a large pot of lightly salted
water on to boil. Heat oil in a large
skillet over medium heat. Add
asparagus and scallions and cook,
stirring occasionally, until vegetables
are tender and browned in places, 10
to 12 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk
ricotta and lemon zest in a large
bowl. Cook penne until just tender,
about 10 minutes. Measure out ¼
cup of the pasta-cooking water; stir
into the ricotta mixture until creamy.
Drain the penne and mix into the
ricotta mixture; toss to coat. Add the
vegetables and toss well. Season with
salt and pepper and serve garnished
with basil.
