eructation,
flatulence,
gastroenteritis, GI
disorder, nausea,
rectal disorder,
vomiting.
GU: urinary
frequency, UTI.
Metabolic:
hyperglycemia,
hyperlipidemia.
Musculoskeletal:
arthralgia, back
pain, hypertonia,
neck pain.
Respiratory:
bronchitis,
dyspnea, increased
cough, upper
respiratory tract
infection.
Skin: rash.
Other: flulike
syndrome,
infection, injectionsite reaction.
Symptomatic response to
therapy doesnt preclude the
presence of gastric malignancy.
Alert: Prolonged use of proton
pump inhibitors may cause low
magnesium levels. Monitor
magnesium levels before start of
treatment and periodically
thereafter.
Alert: Monitor patient for signs
and symptoms of low
magnesium level, such as
abnormal heart rate or rhythm,
palpitations, muscle spasms,
tremor, or seizures. In children,
abnormal heart rate may present
as fatigue, upset stomach,
dizziness, and light-headedness.
Magnesium supplementation or
drug discontinuation may be
required.
Alert: May increase risk for
Clostridium difficileassociated
diarrhea (CDAD). Evaluate for
CDAD in patients who develop
diarrhea that doesnt improve.
Dont confuse Protonix with
Prilosec, Prozac, or Prevacid.
Dont confuse pantoprazole with
aripiprazole.
Instruct patient to take exactly
as prescribed and at about the
same time every day.Tell patient
to swallow tablet whole and not
to crush, split, or chew it. Tell
patient that antacids dont affect
drug absorption.
