School: Joe Nightingale Elementary District: Orcutt Union School District Grade Level: Kindergarten/First Combination 1. Planning: Is accomplished each year with the help of all the same grade level teachers. Teachers use Common Core curriculum. Math and Language arts books are provided that follow the Common Core Standards. Planning is done at least one week ahead. Each day is planned according to where the students are in accomplishing the standard. Students are often participating in routine tasks because they are slowly learning letter by letter and number by number. 2. Learning about students: - There are 3 ELL students within the classroom. Two ELL students have already tested out of receiving help in regards to ELL classes. One student is brand new and is currently in the process of being CELDT tested. - There is one student who may have a learning disability (ADD) however because of the young age of the student he has yet to be properly diagnosed. All signs however point toward him having a lot of difficulty accomplishing projects and staying on task. Special accommodations such as having these students sit at closer proximity to the teacher are helping them stay focused longer. - Almost all students are considered to be performing at their grade level. The type of grouping is heterogeneous and based mostly on how students interact socially together rather than how they are performing academically. - Children at this grade level seem very happy and eager to learn new information. There is a clear difference between the kindergarteners and first graders. You can however visibly tell the difference between the two grade levels. The kindergarteners are clearly learning how to attend school and how to behave in a classroom setting whereas the first graders are much more independent and self sufficient. - Students seem to be very well rounded in regards to their interests. A large number of students are active in sports outside of school. Others are interested in mine-craft video games, animated movies, and popular music. 3. My master teacher is great with classroom management. All student respect her and other adults within the classroom. There are times where the teacher has to gently remind students of the classroom expectations. She does this in a very loving, kind way, that registers with each student.
