William Golding’s capability to blend a character’s depiction with the underlying theme
created by rich symbolism is an impression that is unmatched by most other novelists. The
persona he gives to the characters in the allegory Lord of the Flies signifies not only the
characterizations of the individual, but allows symbolic meaning to be derived from the
character’s personality. This analytical device, permits the reader to grasp a much deeper
meaning of the novel, and opens up a new representation of what is shown on the surface – not
the true symbolism of the item at hand. Golding’s ideas and symbolic portrayals is a method
used to paralyze an image of more profound meaning to mere items and actions that have
occurred on the eerie island the school boys have crashed upon.
