Assignment 1 Proposal: What is a Landscape?
A landscape is traditionally defined as a space in nature untouched by destructive human
hands, whereas a place is defined as specific spot, regardless of human inhabitants. Around West
Texas, this couldnt be more far than the truth. The Permian Basin has had its entire landscape
altered by the consumeristic trends of todays society and each individual spot of land has been
influenced by consumerism. West Texas is characterized by the overwhelming signs of
consumerism. I intend to capture the signs of consumerism like the oil industry, fast food signs,
housing, and the effects of traffic on the Permian Basin to help explain the hazardous effects of
our societys need for survival.
