Focusing on Broad Organization Needs

It is often difficult to provide strong justification for projects, but

everyone agrees they have a high value
It is better to measure gold roughly than to count pennies
precisely
Three important criteria for projects:
There is a need for the project

There are funds available

Theres a strong will to make the project succeed

Categorizing Projects

One categorization is whether the project addresses

a problem
an opportunity, or
a directive
Another categorization is how long it will take to do and when it
is needed

Another is the overall priority of the project

Project Initiation Process Group

Recognizing that a project

or phase should begin and
committing to do so

Initiation Process Group

Facilitate the formal authorization to start a new project or a
Project phase
Often done external to the project's scope of control by the
organization or by program or portfolio processes
In multi-phase projects, initiating processes are carried out
during subsequent phases to validate the assumptions
Decisions made during the original Project Charter processes

Develop Project Charter

The Process of developing a document that formally
authorizes a project or phase

Project charter that formally authorizes a project and Project

Manager
Project Initiator or sponsor external to the project organization,

at a level that is appropriate to funding the project, issues the

Project Charter

Project Charters
After deciding what project to work on, it is important to let

the rest of the organization know

A Project Charter is a document that formally recognizes
the existence of a project and provides direction on the
projects objectives and management
Key project stakeholders should sign a project charter to
acknowledge agreement on the need and intent of the
project; a signed charter is a key output of project
integration management

Identify Stakeholders
The Process of identifying all people or organizations impacted
by the project, and documenting relevant information

Stakeholders are persons and organizations that are

actively involve in the project
They can exert influence over project and deliverables
Stakeholders should be classified according to their interest,
influence and involvement in the project
