    Training.FromwhenIwasachildtillnow,Ivealwayswantedtobeasoldier.AsIturned17and
    sawanopportunitytotakethefirststeptowardthatgoal,Ididjustthat.February12,2015I
    enlistedintheArmyNationalGuardasa13BravoFieldArtillerycannoncrewman.
    Aftermyenlistment,InowhadthenewresponsibilitytoattendtheNationalGuarddrills
    oneweekendamonth.Thedrillswerenotwithmyrealunit,asIamnotcertifiedtotrailthere
    yet.ThequalificationstodrillwithaunitmusthavebothcompletedBasicCombatTraining,
    alongwiththemilitaryoccupationalspecialtiesadvancedindividualtraining.Soitswitharecruit
    sustainabilityprogramthatdoesatopnotchjobatpreparingoneselffortherigorofBasic
    CombatTrainingandadvancedindividualtraining.
    Ihadattended4drillswithmyrecruitsustainabilityprogramfrommytimeofenlistment
    tomyshipdatetoBasicCombatTraining.ThoughIwasonly17andajuniorinhighschool,I
    couldonlycompletemyBasicCombatTraininginthesummerofmyschoolvacation.Iwould
    thenhavetoattendmyadvancedindividualtrainingthesummerofmysenioryear,soIwould
    becertifiedtotrainwithmyunitinsteadoftherecruitsustainabilityprogram.
    ThedayIshippedtoBasicCombatTrainingwasMay27,2015.WhenIarrivedatthe
    airportandgotonthatplane,IalmostcouldntbelievewhatIwasabouttogothrough.MyBasic
    CombatTrainingwaslocatedatFortSill,Oklahoma.IdidnotarrivethereuntilMay28,2015,

    whichIwastoldIwouldgettherethedayIleftEvansville.ThedaysatFortSillwerelongand
    hot.Trainingwasalloutsideandduringthehottestpartsoftheday.TheDrillSergeantswere
    worsethanIthoughttheywouldbe.IdidmanythingsthatIneverthoughtIwoulddowithmy
    lifewhileIwasinmytraining,thoughthebestpartwouldbethatIwaspaidtoattendBasic
    CombatTrainingthewholetime.
    Afterspending6daysinreceptionand9weeks4daysatBasicCombatTraining,I
    finallycompletedmytrainingandgraduated.Myfamilycametowatchmewalkacrossthestage
    andfinallybecomeasoldier.ItwasthemomentthatItransitionedfromachildtoadult.Ihad
    finallysurvivedtherigoroftheArmyandcouldcontinueinmytrainingwiththeArmyNational
    Guard.
