Running Head: LITERATURE REVIEW

The First Days of School by Harry Wong is not your typical book to be read from
page 1 to the end. On the contrary, this book provides plenty of real life scenarios that
teachers have encountered over the years that will help new teachers not feel that they are
alone. (Wong, 2001) There is overwhelming evidence that the first two to three weeks of
school are critical in determining how well students will achieve for the remainder of the year.
(p.12)

Having an idea of what to expect not only in your first years of teaching, but in your
first days of school is key in order to be an effective teacher. The First Days of School book
helps new teachers grasp the reality of what to expect, how to deal, and how to be effective
when you don't have much experience. Its crude examples and straight to the point view
provides much needed help to those teachers seeking it. This book was given to me by my
National University provider on my first month of teaching. It has helped me significantly in
avoiding catastrophes that I undoubtedly would have made due to being a rookie. My
management skills, my relationship with my students, and my lesson planning is much
structured in part to this book.
