Shakespeare establishes a sense of unease in the opening scene by introducing the

mysterious, initially silent ghost of Hamlet's father. This ' dreaded sight' creates an
ominous mood and sense of foreboding as he does not reveal his intentions to Horatio
and the other men present upon his first appearance. This 'illusion' may have 'usurps't
this time of night' to warn them of their country's fate or Hamlet is angry and bitter about
his mother's sudden and unexpected marriage to Claudius, so soon after his father's
death. He reveals this frustration .
