Born in Sensuntepeque, Cabańas in El Salvador in 1980. Came to this country 10
years ago by himself and met up with family in Santa Cruz.

 
Born in surrounding area of El Salvador͛s Capital city, San Salvador in 1983. Came
to this country when he was 17, along with his parents and sister and they settled
here in Monterey County.

Background:
El Salvador achieved independence from
Spain in 1821 and from the Central
American Federation in 1839. A 12-year
civil war, which cost about 75,000 lives,
was brought to a close in 1992 when the
government and leftist rebels signed a
treaty that provided for military and
political reforms.

El Salvador is known as the Land of Volcanoes;


frequent and destructive earthquakes and volcanic
activity; extremely susceptible to hurricanes.
Natural Disasters:
Earthquake in 1986: resulted in 1,500 deaths,
10,000 injuries, and 200,000 homeless.
Hurricane Mitch: 239 deaths and 135 people
missing in El Salvador. (A total of 11,000-18,000
fatalities and 11,000 missing.)
