28 June 1914: Austria-Hungary archduke Franz Ferdinand

was shot by a Serb nationalist, prompting The Great War.

28 July 1914: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

1918: State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs merged with


Kingdom of Serbia to form Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and
Slovenes (Yugoslavia)

28 October 1940: Balkan campaign began, which Axis


powers tried to conquer countries in Balkan region.

1 June 1941: Axis countries controlled all of Yugoslavia,


Greece and Albania.

1946-1949: Greek Civil War was fought between Balkanbacked army and Western-backed army. This is one of the
first conflict in Cold War.

1990: Yugoslavia started to fell apart due to political


tension and heightening nationalism.

1991-2001: Yugoslav Wars occurred with the main reason


being ethnic conflict. Participants of the conflicts are
countries which used to be part of Yugoslavia.

17 February 2008: Kosovo declared independence from


Serbia

2009-2016: Greece entered period of Great Depression,


affecting Greek people and European countries, especially
Germany.
