It's Greater Chennai Corporation and not Corporation of Chennai anymore

Chennai: Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has inaugurated Greater Chennai
Corporation (GCC) through the video conferencing facility at the Secretariat. The GCC
comprises 42 local bodies that includes 9 municipalities, 8 town panchayats and 25
village panchayats in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts. The boundary of the
extended corporation was extended till Ambattur in the west, Tiruvottiyur on north and
Sholinganallur on the IT corridor. With the expansion of the civic body in 2011 , the area
has increased from 174 sq km to 426 sq km.
According to the official sources, the existence of Greater Chennai Corporation could
bring in funds from international bodies for developments in terms of commercial and
infrastructure. Alongside, the Central Government has also included Chennai for the
Smart City project indicating that GCC would get special allocations. With the other
cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad already has this 'greater' tag, Chennai is now
the fourth city to have that privilege. The G.O for GCC was issued on October 26,2015.
Being the second oldest municipal corporation, the Chennai Corporation was formed on
september 29, 1688. When it comes to population, Chennai is 31st in the world and fourth
in the country. After Delhi and Mumbai, the number of migrants are high in the Chennai
city. According to the census report, the population of Chennai was stood around 25 lakh
in 1968-69 and it increased over 70 lakh in 2011 census. In Chennai Corporation, there
were three Lok Sabha constituencies and 14 Assembly segments. After the expansion of
42 local bodies, the GCC has six Parliamentary constituencies and 24 Assembly
constituencies now.
