What is it?

Persuasive speech is a specific type of speech in which the speaker has a goal of convincing the
audience to accept his or her point of view.
What is it used for?
Persuasive speech is used to persuade an audience to accept all or part of the expressed view
3 Ways to Persuade an Audience:
1. Use ETHOS (credibility)
The audience believes the trustworthiness of the speaker or writer
Speaker or writer is trustworthy, educated, reliable, honest, fair, or is someone the
audience can connect to
Example: "As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely
generate the best results."
2. Use LOGOS (logic)
The audience sees the argument of the writer as reasonable or logical
Speaker uses research, facts, numbers, evidence, charts/diagrams, data, scientific research
and definitions to persuade the audience
Example: "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury: we have not only the fingerprints, the lack
of an alibi, a clear motive, and an expressed desire to commit the robbery We also have
video of the suspect breaking in. The case could not be more open and shut."
3. Use PATHOS (emotion)
The audiences feelings are connected to what the speaker or writer is saying
The speaker or writers uses visuals, figurative language, stories, or humor to connect to
the audience.
Emotions speakers or writers often focus on include love, pity, justice, patriotism, hope,
jealousy, anger, and fear
Example: "If we dont move soon, were all going to die! Cant you see how dangerous it
would be to stay?"

"Where would we be without this tradition? Ever since our forefathers landed at Plymouth Rock,
weve celebrated Thanksgiving without fail, making more than cherished recipes. Weve made
memories."
