February 12, 2016 To whom it may concern, It is my honor to write a letter of recommendation for Dr. Sharren Thomas. She has acted as a professor, advisor, and personal mentor to me throughout my M.A.T. Middle Level Mathematics & Science Education program at Georgia State University I found Dr. Sharren Thomas to be uniquely capable of capturing our attention and igniting our passion for teaching and learning. She carefully plans each lesson to encapsulate the Standards for Mathematical Practice, Common Core standards from the middle grades, pedagogical strategies, and engaging, hands-on activities. Dr. Thomas is able to guide us to a place where we can view the material from the perspective of a middle school student rather than allowing us to simply use algorithms. Since the majority of us are strong math students, facilitating this transition to middle school thinking is no easy task, but Dr. Thomas has been able to show all of us how to view mathematics through the eyes of our students. There are many wonderful professors at Georgia State University, but Dr. Thomas is a standout among them. She has helped me see mathematics education in a completely new way and has absolutely fueled my passion for teaching. Her influence has made a definite impact on who I am as an educator and who I will continue to become throughout my teaching career. Discussion with my fellow classmates clearly indicates that I am not alone in this impression of Dr. Sharren Thomas. Our program has been made immensely more meaningful and impactful because of her presence. It is my privilege to be able to recommend Dr. Sharren Thomas. I can confidently say that she would make any institution immeasurably better. Best Regards, Kylee Hammond Math & Science Educator
