RECOGNITION
Important to ask the conscious
patient Are you choking??
This at least gives the victim whos
unable to speak the oppurtunity to
respon by nodding

ASSES SEVERITY
Have to know :
Mild obstruction

Total obstruction

MANAGEMENT

ADDULT
In mild obstruction, encourage the
patient to continue choughing but do
nothing else except monitor for
deterioration
In total obstruction in conscious
patient :
- 5 back slaps
- Heimlich Manuever ( abdominal
thrust in addult patient or chest
thrust for pregnant obesity and

In an unconscious patient :
- Lower the victim to the floor
- Begin CPR ( even if a pulse is
present )

DO NOT

Try to grasp and object thats lodged


in the person throat
Begin the chest compression of CPR
until the airway is cleared

CHILDREN
If choughing effectively just encouragethe
child to cough and monitor
If choughing is or becoming in effective
asses the child conscious level.
If the child conscious give up to 5 back
blows followed by 5 chest thrust to infants
/ 5 A.T for children ( repeat the seguence
until the obstruction is relieved )

If the child becomes unconscious


place the child on the flat firm
surface, open the mouth and look fro
any obvious object, make an attempt
to remove it with single finger sweep.
If unseccessful, begin CPR as for
paediatric BLS beginning with 5
rescue breathing checking for rise
and fall of chest each time.
