KA21203 Tutorial 1

1. (i) Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and
loaded as shown. Knowing that d1 = 30mm and d2 = 50mm, find the
average normal stress in the mid section of (a) rod AB (b) rod BC(84.9MPa,
-96.8MPa)
(ii) If the normal stress must not exceed 150MPa in either rod determine the
smallest allowable values of the diameters d1 and d2.(22.6mm, 40.2mm)

2. Each of the four vertical links has an 8 x 36mm uniform rectangular cross
section and each of the four pins has a 16mm diameter. Determine the
maximum value of the average normal stress in the links connecting (a)
points B and D (b) points C and E(101.6MPa, -21.7MPa)

3. Determine the diameter of the largest circular hole which can be punched
into a sheet of polystyrene 6mm thick, knowing that the force exerted by the

punch is 45kN and that a 55MPa average shearing stress is required to cause
the material to fail. (43.4mm)

4. The axial force in the column supporting the timber beam shown is P =
75kN. Determine the smallest allowable length, L of the bearing plate if the
bearing stress in the timber is not to exceed 3.0MPa. (178.6mm)

5. Referring to the diagram in Q2, determine (a) the average shearing stress
in the pin at B, (b) the average bearing stress at B in the link BD, (c) the
average bearing stress at B in member ABC, knowing that this member has a
10 x 50mm uniform rectangular cross section. (80.8MPa, 127MPa, 203MPa)
6. The 6kN load, P is supported by two wooden members of 75 x 125mm
uniform rectangular cross section which are joined by the simple glued scarf
splice shown. Determine the normal and shearing stresses in the glued splice.
(565kPa, 206kPa)

7. A centric load, P is applied to the granite block as shown. Knowing that the
resulting maximum value of the shearing stress in the block is 2.5MPa,
determine (a) the magnitude of P, (b) the orientation of the surface on which
the maximum shearing stress occurs, (c) the normal stress exerted on that
surface, (d) the maximum value of the normal stress in the block.(180kN, 45 0,
-2.5MPa, -5MPa)

8. Member AB and AC of the truss shown consist of bars of square cross

section made of the same alloy. It is known that a 20mm square of the same
alloy was tested to failure and that an ultimate load of 120kN was recorded. If
bar AB has a 15mm square cross section, determine (a) the factor of safety
for bar AB (b) the dimension of AC if it is to have the same factor of safety as
AB. (3.97, 16.3mm)
