Firstly, I am personally gearing up for an all new haunt theme for my display, The Disney Haunted
Mansion! I have decided to go all in and see just how many new props I can create this year and how
far I can get with overhauling my display. I have had 2 themes these past few years. One has alws
been Haunted Manor and graveyard, it's pretty classic and standard theme. The other theme has
been more about the essence of Halloween and what we think of when we think of the holiday
which is scarecrows, lighted pumpkins and skeletone. Also classic in many way

that the Haunted Mansion embodies those characteristics very well. I have always been facinated by
the story of the Haunted Mansion from it's very conception. It is one of the most if not the most

a variation of the ride in their parks which is not something many of the other rides can boast. The

As for Fright Radio... Well I am excited for what I do have in store. By the time you read this I will
have recorded a few of the new shows. I took some time away from the show to reinvision the
format of the show and how I present it to you and I think we have come up with something that is
fan, different and easily digested, something that can be provided on a faster turn around and
together with the E-Zine will be a well rounded source of Halloween and Haunt information for

Welcome to the Collectors Corner!
With Toy Fair only a few short weeks away and the Transworld Haunt and Attractions show now only a little more
than a month away | felt it was necessary to try to find something | could tie into both events. Now not only ama
Halloween fanatic but | am a 80's toy fanatic as well! My job is making childrens licensed goods and | work on
handfuls of new licenses almost daily so it goes without saying that | also love the stuff too! In many ways | am still
akid at heart, it’s what | think helps me create the items | work on because | am in love with them almost as much
as the kids who buy them but the toys I love the most still are the one’s | grew up with in the 80's and their is one
in particullar that | feel fits right at home with the haunt industry not only because they are monster related but
also have to do with puppetry which is becoming somewhat of a popular trend in the industry these past few
years. | present to you BOGLINS!
Boglins were a series of toy puppets distributed by Mattel. They were created by Tim Clarke, Maureen Trotto, and
Larry Mass, and Licensed by Seven towns. The original run of Boglins was released in 1987, coinciding with a
“creatures” craze that included Ghoulies, Critters, and Gremlins. Boglins were made of flexible rubber and could be
manipulated to represent speech and facial expressions. Several series of Boglins were released, themed around
goblins, aquatic creatures, and Halloween, or with tufts of hair.
In my opinion Mattel was ahead of their time with the creation of these little dudes. There was just something
about 80's toys and the creativity of toys back then. People were not afraid to take some risks and create intellec-
tual properties and toys that people have never heard of before. The quality of the toys especially Boglins seemed
to be greater than many toys these days. | mean every little detail all the way down to the packaging which in the
Boglins case was a crate with bars that slid up and down to release them was super detailed and well thought out.
These days (in my opinion) toys are slapped together and creativity seems low. There are also a lot of companies
who are creating and re-creating a lot of what is out there. People simply shop the shelves of the toys isiles and
re-create the same products over and over. How many Boglins have you ever seen?! They were just super cool!
They made an impact (at least on me) and they brought a fun play experience to the consumer (which was me!)Iwill always remember the day | received my Boglin. It was
on my 7th birthday 1987, | remember that a Boglin is al |
wanted. That morning which was a Sunday I believe, | got
my birthday gift and | knew almost instantly that it was a
Boglin from the square shape of the box. The Boglin | had
been given in particular was Viobb. He was a blue Boglin
with purplish colored back. | remember slipping him on. He
had a very stretchy rubber body. You would place your hand .
up the underside (sounds gross) and inside there were .
simple controls for the eyes. The eyes could be made to look
left and right and even blink which | thought was great! The
mouth you simply moved like a sock puppet. These little creatures could be pretty expressive. Their eyes even
glowed at night! To this very day | still have my Viobb and the box he came in. | can't remember very many toys
back in the 80's that were based off horror movies such as Critters and were made to be puppets but | think that
truly set Bogins a part from anything being made at the time.
Now | mentioned that a growing trend in the haunt industry these days seems to be puppets and while | don't think
that has anything to do with Boglins | do think itis interesting and is a smart move. Many companies still make
amazing animitronics which | believe is the eye candy of a haunt but there are some companies out there that are
applying ‘Actor Animitronics” now which | think not only offer you the same eye candy but also less potential for
break downs and more ability for being unexpectedness.
An animitronic runs on a scripted cycle that you program, when triggered the routine runs and some in the congo
line going through the haunt may see that routine in it’s entirety and others may see it at the end of it's cycle with
less effect but | think with an actor animitronic you can produce the scare at any moment to no end except for when
your actor feels like stopping. Of course puppeteering is not easy task, takes work and skill to do but | think itis well
‘worth it should companies continue to incorporate actor animitronics into their product lines.
There is a uniqueness that comes from a puppet that | believe you do not get from a stand alone animated prop or
haunt actor in a costume. Now everything has it's place in a haunt but simply speaking on puppets they definitely
add a creepy vide. You know they are not real, their look can be over the top and with the right person working
them they offer a fun interactive experience for your guests. | see puppets being used more and more along side
que line entertainers where the puppet is made to look like a zombie grabbing on to the actor. The actor has one
free arm and the other arm is used to puppeteer the puppet. | have also seen zombie puppets being manned from
inside an open window or doorway, these puppets have even had water and or air blasters connected to them for
startle scares. These are just a few offerings making their way into product lines across the haunt industry and | only
believe we will contiunue to see this trend grow
more and more because of it's flexability and almost
endless possabilities.
Boglins definintely made their impact on the kids of
the 80's and even fora short period of time had a
small comback when Mattel jumpstarted them
again in the early 2000's creating one's that talked
and even one’s that stuck out their tounges and spit
water. They captured my attention and you can
even say my imagination and | look forward to
seeing the day when a new version of these
ghoulish friends of mine make it back into the eyes
of the consumers today.Ar

See =HELLO HAUNTERS!
For some time now | have wanted to give sand casting a try. | first
leaned about sand casting in the book series created by Lynne
and Shawn Mitchell How To Haunt Your House . | had received the
first issue of the series as a Christmas gift some years ago and
while flipping through it | came across the sand casting tutorial
and thought how fun and useful it looked to be especially for
casting smaller items.
Fast forward to today and I finally decided to give sand casting a
tryand lam glad I did! The catalyst for me to finally try sand
casting was when my daughter received Kinetic Sand as a gift.
The Kinetic Sand doesn't require water, holds it shape very well,
and does not stick to anything, After playing around with it for a
bit the light bulb went off in my head to give ita try and use it for
sand casting,
I won't go into great detail about the process because you can
easily look it up on line or check it out in the Mitchell's book but
the gist ofits to find an object you want to make a casting of,
press it into the sand to get the impression of the piece and fill
the impression that has been left with hot glue. Once the glue
dries you are left with a casting of the piece.
| choose a small baseball sized skull | had lying around and
pressed it's face into the sand. It took about 3-4 glue sticks to fill
up the void left behind and ensure that the glue filed it up fully
and evenly with the sand leaving the back of the casting nice and
flat. | would say about 2-3 minutes later the glue had cooled and I
pulled the casting, Originally | had thought that maybe the
kinetic sand which normally does not stick to
anything would not stick to my casting but there was some slight
clean up. | simply used a wood skewer to clean out the sand as
best could then ran the piece under water to get any sand that
was left over off. It tooka little time but the results (in my opinion)
were well worth it.
I made two sized skulls with this method and while neither were
perfect representations of the original they were good enough
for my intended uses on tombstones and my future mausoleum
build. | gave them a quick paint job each by using a base of
acrylic black paint then a dry brush of white over top for a stone
look.Overall | would say sand casting is an enjoyable and easy process
best served for small items that you may need a few multiples of.
Larger castings aren't out of the question but you would have to
test melting large portions of glue sticks in a pot for some fast
pours because the time it would take to fill up a sand casted mold
froma hot glue gun would take more time than this haunter
thinks it would be worth.
I would be interested to see what other casting materials could
be used using this technique like resins perhaps or various types
or rubber or silicone but for the time being hot glue works for me.
Iwould definitely suggest giving this a try. Even if you don't have
anything you really need to cast up at the moment itis still a fun
craft to do.
Ifyou happen to give this s try or try other methods please let me
know in the comments below and attach some pictures for us to
see, Have fun with it and now on to the next creepy creation for
the 2016 Haunt Season!
