    Odyssey 1 Paraphrasing Exercise

    Two steps are vital in adequate paraphrasing, changing both the structure of the
    passage and the words used. Unless you do both, you are in danger of plagiarizing
    someone elses text.
    Changing the Wording
    1. Highlight keywords that can be changed
    2. Circle specialized words that address the specifics of the topic
    3. Find alternate words for those in 1 and 2
    Changing the Structure
    1. Bullet-point or list out the big ideas
    2. Set the original text aside where you cannot read from it
    3. Read your version and then check it against the originalis there any unintended
    plagiarism? and is it accurate? Highlight any words that show up in both the original
    and the paraphraseare any of these words important ones, such as verbs,
    adverbs, or adjectives?
    Paraphrase the following passage, using the steps listed above.
    But never in this world is Odysseus dead
    only detained somewhere on the wide sea,
    upon some island, with wild islanders;
    savages, they must be, to hold him captive.

    Odyssey I.240-243
    Odysseus cant be dead, and is only stuck somewhere being held captive by
    some evil savages.
    Paraphrase:
    Odysseus is not dead on this planet
    In the vast ocean, someone is simply holding him captive.
    With some aborigines upon isolated lands;
    Holding Odysseus as prisoner makes them monsters.

    Odyssey 1 Summary Exercise


    Summarizing involves explaining the main idea of another persons writing. It
    --is shorter than the text you read
    --touches on main ideas only
    --represents ideas in terms of importance author intended
    Read the passage and summarize it so that it is no more than half the length of the
    original idea.
    Were his death known, I could not feel such pain
    if he had died of wounds in Trojan country
    or in the arms of friends, after the war.
    They would have made a tomb for him, the Akhaians,
    and I should have all honor as his son.
    Instead, the whirlwinds got him, and no glory.
    Hes gone, no sign, no word of him; and I inherit
    trouble and tears and not for him alone,
    the gods have laid such other burdens on me.
    Odyssey I.281-289
    Summary:
    If he died after the war I wouldnt be so agonized.
    The Greeks wouldve made a nice grave for him.
    Instead, the whirlwinds got him and he didnt get any glory.
    Im sad; the gods have done things like this to me before.
