Science Curriculum unit

Alyssa Mills
Title: Living Systems
Grade Level: 3
Rationale: In this unit, students will be exposed to new vocabulary,
and concepts. It is essential that the students develop full
understanding of this material. The material presented is presented in
a way that is easy to understand and remember. There are many fun
activities incorporated and many discussions to be held. This unit
allows students to be accountable like in taking notes, and
presentations.
Major Goals and Objectives: The major goals for this unit are for
students to be able to understand relationship between organisms and
be able to understand a variety of ecosystems.
SOLs: 3.5 The student will investigate and understand relationships among organisms in aquatic
and terrestrial food chains. Key concepts include
a) producer, consumer, decomposer;
b) herbivore, carnivore, omnivore; and
c) predator and prey.

Extension activities and activities to meet the needs of


diverse learners:
Day 3 group activity: The students will be divided into groups and each
group will be assigned a role as either a carnivore, herbivore,
omnivore. From these groups, the students will use technology to find
images of their selected group. Once 3-5 images are found, students
will print them off, cut and paste them onto a piece of construction
paper. Each group will then come up to the front of the class to
present what they chose and why.
Day 4 game: On a stack of cards will be pictures of predators and prey.
Like in the game of war, each student will draw a card from the top of
the pile, who ever has the predator wins that match.
