Concrete Poems
When the form takes specific shape that relates to
the poem, it is known as a concrete poem.

Quatrain
A stanza or poem consisting of four
lines. Lines 2 and 4 must rhyme while
having a similar number of syllables.

Different figurative language and
devices are used in poetry to
convey theme, and meaning.

The use of sensory
language (5 senses of
touch, smell, taste,
sound, and sight) and
figurative language
to create a mental
picture of the story
for the reader.

Diction
The style of speech used by the author
ex: informal diction could use slang like
aint or sup.

The SMILE acronym is helpful to
remember what to look for and think
about after reading a poem.

S = STRUCTURE
How is this piece organized? ( How many
stanzas/verses) Why is it organized or ordered
that way?
What is the structure/form of the poem? (line
length/rhyme scheme? Is there any rhythm,
repetition, etc.?)

M = MEANING
How does the title contribute to the meaning?
What is the poet discussing?
Is there an overall theme and idea in the
poem?

I = IMAGERY
What pictures do you get in your mind when
you read the poem?
What words has the poet used to create an
image?

L = LANGUAGE
Are there any complicated words? (Be sure to
use context clues!)
Is the language simple to understand?
Does the poem contain similes, metaphors,
personification, symbolism, or other figurative
language?
Do any specific words have positive, negative,
or neutral connotations? How do they relate
to the overall message or theme?

E = EFFECT
What is the effect of the poem?
What does the poem make you feel/think
about?
What opinion does it show about the subject?
What is the poet trying to say about their
subject?
