On Feb. 13, Wheatland Inn Manager Paul Gill

quickly stepped out of his office to run a few errands; all the time it took for three disguised individuals to pull off their heist by entering Branders Lounge, producing a weapon, and walking
away with a couple thousand dollars.
Security camera footage showed the culprits
entering the Wheatland Inn establishment around
6 p.m. with their faces covered by masks. The
individuals continued to approach the Legends
restaurant but turned around when noticing the
large number of people and families, Gill suspects. Upon changing their direction, the three
noticed the Branders Lounge, where they proceeded to present what appeared to be gun, demand the staff to provide access to the backroom,
and request the safe to be opened. With roughly
15 staff members working that night, Gill is concerned about the safety of his employees.
She said she doesnt have the key, but they
kept saying open the safe, and she said she cant,
Gill said. I feel horrible for our staff, and I worry
about them, so I want them to be as safe as possible. Im just glad there was no one hurt.
The establishment had faced similar accounts
in the past, and with VLT machines on site, have
safety policies and procedures in place. Nonetheless, Gill estimated the suspects managed to take
off with a couple thousand dollars. While held at
gunpoint, the Saturday night incident was surreal
for bartender Cheryl Graig, whos worked at the
lounge for 12 years.
They came in and they had the masks on, and
all I was thinking was is this Halloween? Craig
said. I thought someday this is going to happen
to me because Ive been here too long and times
are desperate now. You dont know why this happens. I hope they get caught thats all I want, because I dont want anyone else to go through it.
Craig was demanded to open the backroom
door where the culprits started grabbing money
stuffed in glasses, causing some to fall and shatter. After they were unable to get access to the
safe, they left the premises.
According to RCMP, the culprits fled the scene
in a blue SUV.
One of the suspects is described as having a
slim build, approximately 58 tall, with a grey
hooded sweater and a distinctive brimmed dark
hat. His accomplice had a smaller build, same
height, possibly a female and wearing a dark blue
zip-up hooded sweater and black hat.

This is the 119th anniversary of the discovery

of Aspirin (ASA). The original source of the
drug, salicylic acid, was the bark of the willow
tree, known and used by the Sumerians about
5000 years ago. Salicylic acid was isolated from
this bark in 1763 but it was too irritating to the
stomach. Finally, in 1897, the Bayer company in
Germany patented acetylsalicylic acid and the rest
is history.
People with pets you know the joy and comfort
they bring to their life and research has shown that
they do improve mental and physical health. This

even reduce depression.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Cheadle Lions Club along with the Wheatland and Area Hospice Society saw a need last
spring to build a hospice to meet the demand of
the growing seniors population and the limited
care in the county and area.
The society wants to launch an awareness campaign and work with the provincial government
and Alberta Health Services to increase the availability of hospice and palliative care in the communities.
It initially started with Sonny (Warrack) and
his mother-in-law, said Judy McLean, society
member.
All of us have had people die in Strathmore
in either palliative or in home and have seen
the benefit of hospice. Strathmore only has one
palliative care bed, so if there is more than one
person dying, they have to go somewhere unknown.
The hope is to build a facility that can house

eight to 10 beds
The committee visited several Calgary and
Okotoks facilities, and now know they have to
spend between $1 and 2 million to build a hospice centre. So far $100, 000 have been accumulated.
Its received very good support so far from a
lot of people, said Keith Clayton, Wheatland and
Area Hospice Society president.
Its going to take a lot of volunteers that carry
a fair amount of knowledge. Well take volunteers
that dont have the knowledge for various things
but were going to need people with building experience, government, communication and architects.
The next step will be to continue fundraising
through private donations, community fundraising, grants and Alberta Health Services.
Additionally a needs assessment needs to be
done which in turn will determine what funds
and policies will be needed.
The hospice facility is expected to be built
within the next five years.

Strathmore Theatre Players

presents Death by Design
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Theatre Players will
be recreating Rob Uribantis Death by
Design- A Comedy with Murder later
this month. The play is set in a 1932
English countryside manor where play
writer Edward Bennett and actress wife
Sorel flee from London after a terrible
opening night.
However, random guests started
showing up including a politician, a
fiery socialist, a near-sighted ingnue
and a zany modern dancer, and all
have a long-term secret.
One of them gets mysteriously murdered and now its left up to Bridgit,
the feisty Irish maid with a keen interest in homicides, to solve the mystery.
The challenge is often finding something thats inspiring to both our director and our audience, said Tashina
Mackenzie, stage director.
We know our community loves to
laugh. We love to have a lot of fun
when they come out and spend time
with us. We were definitely looking for
something that would hit both of those
spots. We read it out loud and we all
laughed as we were reading even without the acting.
The audience will notice a lot of
slapstick, witty repartee between characters, innuendo and sarcasm.
Graydon Pease, who is in his eighth
show with the Strathmore Theatre

Players, plays the head character Walter Pearce, who is a newly elected
conservative parliamentarian, and is
determined to exhume the glory of
the English economy from its languishment.
However, upon arrival at the manor,
Pearce suddenly becomes an important
part of mystery.
Additionally, he has a love interest
and has no idea how to be a romantic
guy and gets caught up in a challenging situation.
So to try and marry the two things
together in terms of the stiff personality as well as trying to win the love of
a woman is extremely challenging for
Walter, said Pease.
Theres a lot of comedy to come
from those challenges in itself. Things
like coming up with something romantic to whisper in her ear and he has no
clue in how to even to that.
Pease said its been a challenging
role for him because he has a big personality and he has had to play a character that has no personality.
The show will run from Feb. 25-27 at
7:30 p.m and on the 28th at 2 p.m. and
again from March 3- 5 at 7:30 p.m. with
the matinee going on fifth at 2 p.m.
All shows will be at the Hope Covenant Church.
Tickets are $16 for seniors and students, $21 for adults, and can be purchased through their Facebook page or
by cash at the door.

Council interested in GreenTRIP

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Addressing a long-standing and prevalent issue about the lack of transportation, town administration tested the
waters to generate interest among local
politicians for a chance to grab a piece
of a multi-million dollar pie to secure
capital funds for the purchase of transit
vehicles and technologies.
The Alberta government introduced a
$2 billion program in 2010, with a focus on sustainable pubic alternatives
known as the Green Transit Incentives
Program (GreenTRIP). With $160 million still available to municipalities accompanied by a fast-approaching deadline, council was asked for their input
and interest before investing more time
and resources to move further along in
the process.
While no project was proposed in detail, council was introduced to the possibility of a project submission to acquire a wheelchair-accessible van.
Im aware that we are putting the
horse before the cart here, and this is
not how we normally do things, [but]
the problem we have is that were under a time issue here, and this is a fair
amount of work thats going to be involved in this, said Councillor Bob Sobol, who attended a joined Calgary Regional Partnership transportation and
capital regional transportation board
meeting in December.
Theres been a lot of discussions and
suggestions as to how we could use
this unit, but certainly at the end of the
day, no matter how its incorporated, it
would be primarily used for transportation of handicapped persons our community. I know for a fact that a vehicle
like this could be well served and well
used in our community. I want to make
sure council is aware of why and what
the work and potential is before we car-

ry on any further.
The GreenTRIP distributions supply
66 per cent of the eligible projects capital funds, with the remainder paid by
the municipalities coming from other
sources including grants and property
taxes.
Such projects include Light Rail Transit systems (LRT), bus terminals, and
transit vehicles. As all purchases must
be accessible to transit users with special needs and meet Alberta Transportation regulations, a wheelchair-accessible van, which can cost up to $80,000,
not only piqued councils interest but
would address a swelling community
need.
This is such a timely issue and in my
report from the Wheatland Lodge, after
their last meeting, they indicated the
huge issues that theyre having relevant
to the cuts to the Handibus hours and
the deficit in terms of capacity for transportation for seniors in the community,
said Councillor Denise Peterson.
In my Seniors Advisory Committee
meeting report this month, youll see
the same thing, that it is an enormous
issue. Certainly TSI has reported that it
is the number one issue, so its really
timely.
A GreenTRIP application requires a
detailed project application and a business case. While questions were raised
regarding the vehicles operation, hours,
and interference with the Handibus,
planner for the town of Strathmore,
Chuck Procter, noted that the addition
of the unit is expected to compliment
the societys service. However, council
was reminded that currently the van is
just an idea with wrinkles to be ironed
out in the business case.
Council passed a motion to direct administration to continue to work on the
grant application for GreenTRIP and
bring the document back to council for
approval.

Province to spend billions of dollars on infrastructure

MIRIAM OSTERMANN

Alberta politicians - local

list of infrastructure projects
in record time, elected officials said.

list, which in Strathmore include seven projects in need

ed little information regarding

the amount and the origins of
the possible funds - $4.4 billion
that Minister of Infrastructure
Brian Masons spokesperson said
is allocated for new projects and
programs through the provincial
capital plan.
I think the idea behind this
letter was for them to just identify priorities and the letter was
clear that the MLAs would not
be required to provide detailed
information on how projects met
the criteria, but it was more to
gauge where the need was, said
Aileen Machell, press-secretary
for Minister of Infrastructure and
Transportation Brian Mason.
These priorities that Minister
Mason is hoping MLAs come forward with, theyre all for the upcoming capital plan. Its not necessarily for problems, but where
good investments can be made.
I think that our government has
been clear that this is the time to
invest in infrastructure.
Regardless of available capital
plan money, Machell said decisions will be made by the minister and provincial government
in October when the budget is
expected to be released. Fildebrandt was one of 86 MLAs who
received the letter that was sent
out on Jan. 22.
Although he received a list
from the Town of Strathmore
with projects deemed a priority over the next couple years,
he felt it was an inappropriate

tactic to deal with infrastructure

spending.
Were talking about spending hundreds of millions, potentially billions of dollars, and we
shouldnt be rushing things in a
week, as this kind of infrastructure spending needs to be well
thought out and prioritized and
not rushed for political reasons,
Fildebrandt said.
Weve had no indication whatsoever from the province if that
money is connected to anything,
This could be going to a general
pot or to a dedicated fund. The
Strathmore council is not the
only confused municipality. The
list weve been asked to compile
was haphazard and rushed and
we did our best to get word out
to municipalities to collect the
information but it was not fair to
our reeves, mayors, and councillors.
Fildebrandt said the government shouldve met with municipalities, discussed top priorities, and provided enough time
to consult and meet instead of
sending out an E-mail to MLAs
asking for a list in a week.
While Strathmore councillors showed excitement about
the possibility of funds trickling
down into Strathmore, some representatives showed concern regarding the lack of details made
available in the information provided to the government. The list
included predominant projects
of 2nd St. reconstruction, Wad-

dy Lane, and the road replacement of Bayview Rd. with a cost

of $2.3 million. Other items on
the list included Brent Blvd. and
Centennial Drive at $350,000,
Brentwood Reservoir with a remaining cost of nearly $600,000,
and the George Freeman Trail
WID bridge scheduled for 2017
and possibly resulting in a total
of $1 million.
Director of Corporate Services
for the Town of Strathmore, Mel
Tiede, said he hopes the government understands the economic need and invest additional
funds. Much like Fildebrandt, he
was unaware of the details surrounding the funds. The Town
of Strathmore is also a recipient
of nearly $3 million through the
annual Municipal Sustainability
Initiative (MSI) funding.
Our government is committed
to taking advantage of the opportunity to build schools, hospitals, roads, bridges and flood
protection needed to address
Albertas infrastructure deficit,
said Minister Mason.
Investment in major infrastructure projects will help create good paying jobs and stimulate economic growth, and build
a strong economic foundation
for our children and grandchildren.
Even though no date has been
proposed, government officials
said more information will be
released when the budget and
capital plan will be unveiled.

WRC launches first phase of regional water project

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The Wheatland Regional Corporation (WRC) is
inching closer to a centralized water treatment
system through the avowed multi-million-dollar financial injection from the provincial government
to launch the first phase in supplying Gleichen
and Rosebud with water system upgrades.
The first phase of the $51 million potable regional water supply line project, which aims to provide
Standard, Rockyford, Hussar, Gleichen and Rosebud with a cost-effective and reliable solution to
their deteriorating infrastructure problems, is estimated at $22 million.
With the Alberta governments approval of the
project in its entirety, $20 million, or roughly 90
per cent, of the first phase will be dispersed over
five years as part of the Water for Life program.
The funds will include the construction of an
advanced water reservoir, pipeline from the reservoir to the treatment plant, and pipeline from the
treatment plant at the village of Standard to the
hamlet of Gleichen.
Weve been at this for years and the province
came back to us and asked us to prioritize the
project and so we knew that we needed new raw
water reservoirs south of Standard and we knew
the people in Gleichen have needed a different
source of water for a very long time, said Darcy
Burke, Chairman of the WRC and mayor or Rockyford.
Our plant does not currently meet the Alberta
Environment guidelines for water treatment plants.
So when we had the discussions with Wheatland
County and their partners at the table, Rockyford
had to make the decision. To be a part of this project we had to recognize the significance of our
partners. At that point in time, we recognized that
the people in Gleichen, their water is at a point
where they cant drink it.
Wheatland County and the villages of Rockyford,
Standard, and Hussar originally established the
Wheatland Regional Water Partnership (WRWP) to
explore possible solutions to the regional water
issues. Consequently, the partnership created the

Wheatland Regional Corporation, made up of four

members, that is currently under review by Alberta
Municipal Affairs.
The Wheatland Regional Corporation feels that
the regional water supply line project will be more
economical for ratepayers, by providing water to
the east Wheatland area through a single water
source delivered by the Western Irrigation District,
instead of multiple plants.
Sharing the cost of the treatment is basically
going to bring the advantage of less cost to treat
the water and more secure water to these communities, because its coming from one single source
and the quality and quantity of the water will be
controlled, said Baha Hasasneh, general manager
of WRC.
The plants in these communities are a bit old so
they need to be upgraded to the latest technology
and to have a more reliable treatment. Thats why I
think Alberta Environment and the government in
general, were pushing for a more centralized treatment system. The government was pushing for a
central location so at least its better controlled and
less cost for everyone.
Alberta Transportation and the Wheatland Regional Corporation signed an agreement in December 2015, and the government already allocated
$450,000 as part of the first phase cash injection.
Wheatland County Reeve Glenn Koester and
Wheatland County Councillor Rex Harwood, who
are both members of the corporation, also expressed their approval for the project and its significance in the area, in a recent statement.
The new regional facility and potable water supply line to Gleichen includes a new raw water intake and two raw water reservoirs, a raw water
pump station, a raw water pipeline, a water treatment plant and potable water pump station, and
potable water supply pipelines. The construction
is expected to commence in 2016.
This is a huge project, said Burke. Its not very
often we see a $50 million project in Wheatland
County. Were very happy to be a part of that project and we know that were going to be providing
a basic necessity of life to the ratepayers of these
municipalities for a long time.

Albertas entrepreneurial spirit will get us through this,

not a PST
DEREK FILDEBRANDT
MLA Strathmore-Brooks

February opened with a list of academics and
former politicians calling for a provincial sales
tax (PST) in Alberta. In an editorial, they declared
that with significant royalty hikes off the table
that the only option left is another round of massive tax hike on Albertans.
At no point in their proposal did they propose
addressing Albertas chronic spending problem
a significant lapse.
Advocates of the proposal also fail to recognize
the devastating impact job losses have had across
the province.
The $3-billion carbon tax proposed by the NDP
is anticipated to cost the average household an
extra $1,000 per year when fully implemented.
Many Albertans are already running thin margins, worrying if they will still have a job by the
end of the day or if their EI will run out by the
end of the month.
Small businesses and retail groups already hit
hard by a combination of low oil prices and punitive government policies would feel the pinch
even tighter.
It will take a greater imagination to get Alberta
back on track than simply raising another raft of
taxes on Albertans already suffering.
It is true that Alberta faces massive budgetary
shortfalls. The NDP inherited a deficit of $6.1 billion from the former government. Despite raising
business taxes by 20 per cent and marginal personal income tax rates by as much 50 per cent,
not to mention a slate of other tax increases, the
NDP managed to increase the deficit even further
through massive spending increases. The 2016
deficit is anticipated to only increase from the
$9.1 billion number rolled out in the fall.
These spending increases took place in an environment in which Albertas government was
already spending $8 billion more per year than
British Columbia, which is a high-cost jurisdiction. In short, Albertas already bloated government has become even more bloated, when we
can least afford it.
There will always be more good causes to
spend public money on. There is no end to how

much money can be spent on good things, but

there is a point at which spending begins to generate diminishing returns.
For example, Alberta spends more per capita
than any province in Canada on healthcare, yet
by most measures our healthcare outcomes are
below the national average. If money were the
problem, Alberta would have the best healthcare
in the world.
Our government has been comfortable to merely throw more money at problems since the mid2000s; but that was during a time of high oil &
natural gas prices, and when Alberta had no debt
and a huge rainy-day fund to fall back on. Oil and
gas prices have since plummeted, we are significantly indebted once again, $16 billion in contingency savings is gone, yet spending has not been
corrected.
When the NDP introduced a raft of new and
higher taxes in June, they also increased spending by an even greater sum. When the NDP imposed a new $3-billion carbon tax on Albertans,
they committed to spending the vast majority of
it.
Taxes go up, spending goes up, and the deficit
goes up.
Advocates for a PST may be well intentioned,
but I am sceptical that the revenue generated by
it would go to anything but yet another expansion of provincial government spending.
Alberta does have a revenue problem: it is wasting far too much of it and has proven that more
of it is never enough.
Wildrose is the only party committed to a real
reduction in government expenditures with a focus on front-line service delivery, to bring Alberta
closer in line to the national average.
Albertans need their government to take real
action to get spending under control, stimulate
economic growth, and create jobs. Still higher
taxes will not do any of these things.
Discipline, innovation and the Albertas entrepreneurial spirit will.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Property rights, tax dollars at stake

To the Editor
Strathmore town council is preventing a local property owner from taking any action on its land and
buildings. In September, 2015, the local Anglican congregation accepted an offer to purchase its land holdings in downtown Strathmore.
In December, the Diocese of Calgary accepted an
offer to purchase and remove the century old church
building from the property. In January, on advice of
the Western District Historical Society, of which both
the mayor and deputy mayor are directors, Strathmore
town council stepped into those real estate transactions, putting a freeze on any action on the property
for 120 days while it considers declaring the church
and property a municipal historic resource.
The historical society had previously expressed an
interest in buying the building for $1 and removing
it from the churchs land. When it was unable to find
a suitable location, the society expressed interest in
keeping the church where it was, but failed to submit
a written offer for the land. Having failed to act to
secure the property on its own, the historical society
turned to town council to do it for them. Now, the
church and two buyers are waiting for permission to
proceed with what should have been routine real es-

tate transactions.
While the church is trying to be patient, it is difficult to imagine any landowner not being frustrated
at local government stepping in to block a real estate
transaction. Albertans are accustomed to selling their
property without interference. The truth is, though,
that the laws of Alberta do allow a municipality to
make a historical resource designation, so long as it is
willing to pay for the privilege. If town council passes
this bylaw, they will be required to pay compensation,
likely well in excess of a half million dollars, to the
church. That compensation will not change the ownership of the land or building, and will not provide
any benefit to the town. The town needs to be very
careful about using its power in this way, and should
avoid rushing into historical resource designations.
This is a matter that should concern everyone who
owns an older building and every tax payer in Strathmore. I encourage all residents to make their views
on this matter known to town council, and to attend
the Open House on March 1 to learn more and offer
their feedback.

Strathmore Legion
hosting dart tournament
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Over 80 legion branch
members from across the
province are gathering in
Strathmore to illustrate their
technique, aim, and release
at the Alberta NWT Command Legion Dart Tournament with hopes of becoming the one team to advance
to the Dominion Competition in Charlottetown.
Two teams from Strathmore have qualified to participate in the two-day event,
where 82 competitors have
surpassed the branch, area,
and district competitions.
While the event is prominent for participants, hosting the competition benefits
Strathmore in more ways
than one.
It brings money to the legion for one thing, and its
just comradeship and we
meet people from all over,
said Sylvia Westgard, deputy district commander for

the Royal Canadian Legion

Branch #10 and whos organized eight of these events
in the past.
Its just a big event and
its nice to watch because
you get to see who goes on
to Dominion.
Westgard added the bar in
itself has raised $10,000 in
the past.
Darts is a type of throwing game, where small missiles are thrown at a circular
target-board mounted to a
wall. Teams consist of four
players and may opt to have
two spares.
Players are coming from
places such as Cochrane,
Red Deer, and Crowsnest
Pass to participate.
One team will advance to
participate at Dominions in
Charlottetown from May 6-9.
Strathmores Royal Canadian

Chinese New Year began February 8 and lasts till January 27, 2017. It is the year of
the Monkey. The monkey is a clever animal. It is usually compared to a smart person.
During the Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 BC), the dignified Chinese official title of
marquis was pronounced Hou, the same as the pronunciation of monkey in Chinese.
The animal was thereby bestowed with an auspicious meaning.

FCSS to invest in current programs

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Fears and uncertainty regarding funding after
last years Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) announcement of the discontinuation
of external funds to existing community programs
diminished when the organization had a change
of heart and funnelled funds back into the community.
Last September, the provincial government provided the FCSSs in Alberta with a healthy cash injection of an additional $10 million, totalling $86
million in government funds overall. Shortly after,
a letter from FCSS sent to Strathmores non-profit
organizations stated that funding provided previously would no longer continue except in support
of new initiatives. The announcement in a faltering
economy fuelled anger and worry among the local organizations many fearing the possible dissolution of their programs. Strathmore FCSS had
received $18,000 in additional funds and after the
budget workshop in November 2015, the organization changed their course of action and strengthened currently existing Strathmore initiatives and
programs.
Theyre meeting needs in the community that
our community members need, its that cut and
dry, said Catherine Walsh, Strathmore FCSS coordinator.
Theres no one else offering their services and
they depend on FCSS funding to continue those
services in town. We dont want to see programs
go without funding.
The Growing Families Society, an umbrella organization consisting of the 5 for Life Coalition,
Bridging the Gap, and Growing Opportunities programs, was among those contemplating the survival of certain aspects of some of their programs.
Although the society continues to wait on further
grant funding, a $15,000 donation from FCSS ensures the program will continue to operate.
It was a relief because now we can keep things
going, we can keep progressing for a little bit lon-

ger, but were stumbling along, said Margo Sevcik,

president of the Growing Families Society.
$15,000 has come to Growing Families from
FCSS but we have to split it among all these other
programs that are doing well. The governments
getting really good bang for their dollar when they
give us funds, we just need to secure a few more
grants. The problem is going to come up again
next year, because the government grants run on
a yearly basis.
The Growing Families Society was one of a few
recipients that received funding from the Strathmore FCSS. Recently, the United Way also divided
up $56,000 among 12 organizations, which included the 5 for Life coalition, Bridging the Gap, and
Growing Opportunities. Other programs included
the Strathmore Municipal Library, School Fuel,
Roots of Empathy, and the Youth Club of Strathmore.
According to Walsh, W. Brett Wilson once again
invested money into Strathmores non-profit organizations. While the funding was welcomed,
Sevcik said the recently vacated position of lifeskills worker is still not posted as money for the
position is not currently available. Furthermore,
one of their programs may be acquired by another
organization as the Growing Families Society no
longer has the administrative support to keep the
program operational.
It would be nice to have block-funding so
we know that were on a three-year basis, and it
doesnt even necessarily need to be guaranteed
but to say, you guys are a good program we want
to keep you going as long as our budget stays the
same well keep giving you the same amount of
money, Sevcik said. If you think of the Bridging
the Gap program theres that sense of community
that the program provides to the seniors by linking
them so they have lunch club. Its not just the meal
thats feeding them, its the sense of community
thats feeding them.
FCSS is currently in the process of a needs assessment and depending on the results said it
could affect their spending in the future.

Rosebuds music director

sings in Juno-nominated choir
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Bill Hamm, music director of Rosebud Theatre and Rosebud School of
the Arts, is a member of the Canadian
Chamber Choir, whose album Sacred
Reflections of Canada: A Canadian
Mass, was nominated for a 2016 Juno
Award for Classical Album. The awards
will be announced in Calgary March
28 to April 3. As part of the festivities,
on April 1, Hamm will also play in the
Juno Cup, a competitive hockey game
between Juno nominees and former
NHL players, which raises money for a
music education charity.
Hamm has been singing with the
choir since 2006, and choir members,
who are spread around most of the
provinces of Canada, typically get together to tour twice a year, he said.
They spend a couple of months learning their music on their own before
getting together for two or three days
of intense rehearsals. Then they spend
several days giving concerts and workshops.
One of the choirs mandates is to foster choral communities, Hamm said, so
they work with a variety of children,
youth and adult choirs, in addition to
performing. The choir has toured most
of the Canadian provinces, and took
their latest tour this January, in southern Ontario.
Sacred Reflections of Canada, their
second album, was recorded last May.
All the music was written by living Canadian composers.
Hamm knew the choir hoped the
new album would be nominated for a
Juno, but he said the announcement
was still a surprise.
Its quite humbling to be recognized
in such a way, he said. Were just ordinary people.
Hamm and eight fellow choir members will be in Calgary for the award
events. He looks forward to sharing the
awards announcement with them at a
banquet on Saturday night, and having
them watch him play in the Juno Cup
against the former NHLers the night
before. The Cup raises funds for MusiCounts, the music education charity
of the Canadian Academy of Recording
Arts and Sciences.
Hamm invites Strathmore Times readers to come to the game.
The game is very entertaining for
the crowd, he said. You get to see

Goes Your Way.

games left in the season, knows how
crucial it will be for the team to hit
their stride before Sutter Cup playoffs.
Im happy with how weve progressed throughout the year, said the
Strathmore native of the Chestermerebased minor midget triple-A team.
We have had some stumbles in the
odd game, but our guys are getting
better and working hard. We have
some team goals as well that we feel
pretty confident about in who we are
as a group. I think we can do a lot of
damage in the playoffs and would be
disappointed if we didnt make Sutter
Cup.
According to Grant, local players Joel Krahenbeil, Isaac Beniot, Ty
Tarvyd, Tyler Strath and Kelton Travis
have been showing strong leadership
qualities and skill, which have made
a noticeable impact on the team this
season.
He added that the team has set
themselves up to be successful at Sutter Cup and now its just a matter of
fine tuning some areas including consistently dominating teams.
As far as work ethic, I think its
been there consistently throughout
the year, said Grant. Its just being
mentally engaged and buying in to
what were doing. I wouldnt expect
any less from 15-year-olds. Ive never
coached a team that hasnt had ups
and downs. As long as were learning
from every one one of those stumbles
I think well be fine.
Whether it has been through player
meetings or video sessions, there has
been a constant reminder to the players about giving it 100 per cent every.
The Raiders are sitting in fourth
place with 40 points and a record of
15-6-10.
The Sutter South Cup will take
place from March 10-13 in Lethbridge
with the top two teams, plus the host
team, going to the Provincial tournament. The Sutter North Cup will also
send two teams.

The Strathmore Spartans senior boys
basketball team started strong in their
home tournament on Feb 12-13.
The team opened up with a 70-point
win over Hugh Sutherland before winning a hard-fought double overtime
game over Henry Wisewood the next day,
which earned them a spot in the final
with Camrose, who defeated them 71-57.
Spartans Head Coach Kyle Larson said
they were without four regulars in the
line-up, and playing with short bench
was tough because in the end the boys
were exhausted.
I thought we played well through the
first half tonight, said Larson.
I think a little bit of fatigue caught
up to us and a short bench. We couldnt
match their size. We only had two our
two main posts here tonight and asked

other people to do jobs they normally

dont.
He added the size difference made
it difficult to generate anything in the
paint and they lived or died in the area
all game long.
The biggest thing they can learn from
the tournament is working on more of
a man-to-man offense and getting more
aggressive, while trying to be better on
rebounding.
Josh Lawal said his team left it out all
on the table but exhaustion set in after
that double overtime game.
Next time hopefully were mentally
and physically prepared, said Lawal.
It was good for us to have this kind of
game to let us know where were at this
point of the season.
Lawal was awarded the All-Star award
for his team, but said the whole team
couldve received the honour with the effort they put in all tournament long.

Hawks entrenched
in tight contests
JUSTIN SEWARD

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks senior girls basketball team were caught
up in a tight battle with the Foothills
Composite Falcons, taking a 28-21 lead
into half, but saw it dissipate and were
outscored 32-26 in the second half, en
route to a 53-47 defeat on home court
on Feb. 11.
I was pleased with our effort in the
first half, said Head Coach Michael Annicchiarico. I thought we controlled
the tempo and controlled the game. But
I think a bit of fatigue set in the second
half. I think a lot of our girls who played
most of the game started to tighten up
a bit and they put on a very effective
press in the fourth quarter.
He said the credit goes to his defense for keeping an offensive juggernaut such as Foothills to only 53 points
because they were used to scoring 90
points on other teams.
However, he felt his team turned the
ball over too much, and not attacking
the basket hard enough hurt them in
the second half.
Its just a matter of will, said Annicchiarico. In the last few minutes we ran
out of gas and it cost us. Hopefully we
can chalk this up as a learning experience and be better for it as the season
goes on.
Meanwhile, the Hawks junior B boys
wrapped up their season with an overtime thriller, coming away with a 40-37
win over Drumhellers St. Anthonys
Saints at Holy Cross Collegiate on Feb.
12.
Head coach Ben Chin said it was a
good game for the boys to experience
early on in their basketball development.
Its a big win for the boys, said Chin.
Its not often you can replicate that
situation in practice. Its just good experience, especially when these kids
are just starting out in their basketball
careers. It was ugly, and I cant say it
was very systematic and all they want
to do is come together as a team and
have fun. And when we can win its that
much easier to have fun.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Im reminded today of how
much all of us need to have
someone that takes care
of us and shelters us and
comforts us. Just like the
shepherd who takes care of
his flock of sheep. The sheep
learn to trust their shepherd
and love him for all he does
for them. There is a desire
within all of us to have that

feel that sense of safety and

We hear about it in Psalm

Shepherd and I will want for
nothing. He makes me to lie
down in green pastures and
leads me beside still waters
and restores my soul.
That sure sounds wonderful.
I think many of us could do
with some restoration and
peace, especially in a world
that has so much turmoil and
trouble.
It goes on to say that even

Chiefs staying atop of division;

Warriors continue to win
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Chiefs played three games in a
four-night stretch last week and came out with five
out of a possible six points.
The local double-A midget team defeated the
CNHA Canucks 5-4 on Feb. 10 in Calgary, while
getting a 5-3 road win in Taber on Feb. 12, before
tying the North Division leading West Central Tigers 4-4 on Feb. 13 in Hussar.
Assistant Coach Keenan Desmet was pretty pleased with how the boys started the game
against the Tigers, getting out to a 4-0 lead; however, penalty trouble would cost them late in the
contest.
We kind of got into some penalty issues there
in the third period, said Desmet. Thats kind of
what solved the game to get to a tie. Throughout
the whole game we were down to two lines. The
guys were pretty tired in the third period and we
showed that.
Ryan Bell, Riley Romashenko, Brad Hendricks
and Robert Butterwick scored in the tie.
Desmet said Taber came out hard and got the
first goal a couple minutes into the game, and after that the boys were able to weather the storm
by pushing back and creating a couple breaks for
themselves.
Butterwick had three goals, while Wacy Sandum
and Ryan Skytt rounded out the offense with one
goal each in Taber.
Romashenko led the attack with two goals, while
Butterwick, Bell and Chris Rebeyka also scored
against the Canucks.
Desmet feels the team is peaking at the right
time with three games left in the season.
I think everybody that has played in the last few
weeks here from top to bottom have all stepped
up in certain ways, said Desmet.
Its a good thing to see because were coming
up to the final tournament here and I think were
in a pretty good spot. I have nothing but confidence going into the tournament with the team
we got.
The Chiefs will be on the road on Feb. 20 to
face Airdrie at 4:45 p.m. before playing their last
regular season home game at the Strathmore Fam-

ily Centre on Feb. 21 versus the Foothills Bisons

at 7 p.m.
Currently, the Chiefs are in first place with 43
points, six points clear of Okotoks and 11 points
ahead of Taber.
WARRIORS IN A BATTLE
The Wheatland Warriors sit in third place, one
point back of both Taber and Cranbrook, but have
games in hand, after doubling up on Okotoks 4-2
on Feb. 13 and annihilating the West Central Tiger
11-3 on at the Strathmore Family Centre on Feb.
14.
Assistant Coach Ty Brinton said against a weaker
Tigers team it was great to see the boys showcasing their strong skating capabilities and work on
not letting bad habits creep into their game.
We really used that to our advantage, said Brinton. Especially when we get teams like that on the
big ice, we can really skate them into the ground.
He mentioned that it was a nice change to see
the scoring spread out rather than one line doing
all the work, which helped in the team pushing
the pace all game.
It was good to see the boys come in and compete, said Brinton. They didnt take them too
lightly, a lot of times in the bantam age group you
can take teams for granted that are a lot weaker
than you and lower in the standings.
Cole Berg sniped a hat trick; Brandon Kasdorf
and Mo Hakim each added two goals, while Anson
McMaster, Max Schafer, Ethan McKibbin and Keith
Yellowfly added one each against the Tigers.
Hakim notched two goals, while Kasdorf and
Hakim added singles against Okotoks.
The Warriors will hit the ice in Red Deer on Feb.
20 at 2:30 p.m. before hosting the Foothills Bisons
at the Strathmore Family Centre at 4:15 p.m. on
Feb. 21.
BRAVES REST
The Wheatland Braves had the weekend off due
to the Alberta Winter Games and they will resume
play with two home games this weekend where
they will face the Foothills Bisons in Hussar on
Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. before hosting the Bow Valley
Timberwolves at the Strathmore Family Centre on
Feb. 21 at 12:45 p.m.

JUSTIN SEWARD

For the second consecutive
year the Wheatland Kings are
moving on to the second round
of the playoffs after beating the
Banff Bears 4-3 at the Strathmore Family Centre on Feb.
12, sweeping the series 2-0 and
earning themselves a date with
the number one-ranked Cochrane Generals.
The first period saw Banff execute as they got out to a 2-0 lead,
while the second period was a
back and forth affair, before
the Kings were able find their
groove in the third period.
Kings head Coach Emilio Fuoco said he credited his team for
using their speed and intensity
effectively against a Banff team
who didnt quit.
We knew after the last game
we played them, we peppered
them with shots, said Fuoco.

Once we got our speed going

through the neutral zone, they
couldnt keep up with it. Thats
what the difference was, get
speed through the neutral zone,
put some pucks to the net and
go for the rebounds.
Fuoco said for the boys to
come back on Banff was nothing new for the team as they had
done it a few times throughout
the course of the season.
This is just a little bit of a
warm up for us of knowing what
it feels like, said Fuoco. It feels
good. Now the real stuff starts.
Brooker Pretty Youngman
broke the tie at the 4:47 mark of
the third to propel his team to
the second round.

win.
In the 7-5 Game 1 win on Feb.
10, both teams were tied after
one before the Kings were able
to open it up, outscoring the
Bears 5-2 in the middle frame.
They picked up where they left

adding one early in the third period before letting Banff score
two more, but thats as close as
it got.
Pretty Youngman and Jacen

goals apiece while Blake Bishop,
Jayden Smith and Cole Busslinger supplied one goal each.
Second rounds Game 1 happened on Feb. 16 in Cochrane,
while the Kings will host Game

JUSTIN SEWARD

The reign of two consecutive zone appearances
for the Strathmore Spartans boys curling team is
over after they were defeated 6-5 in the final end
by Standard School during County playdowns at
the Strathmore Curling Club on Feb. 11.
It came down to Standards last rock, where
Grade 11 student Will Kathol played an angle
raise to draw the stone back in behind Strathmores guards, needing a measurement to win.
To watch him call a shot and make it that
tight and be within a minor difference was fun
to watch, said Standard School Coach Cam Holloway.
We havent had a lot of chances to play games
so their experience is lower. The way they adjusted to a missed shot and went with Plan B as much
they could. The skip played some nice shots going into the end.
Holloway mentioned that with this win they can
still grind it out and come out with a win.
Standard School has only run competitive curling for the last three years and for them to go to
zones will hopefully encourage players to partici-

pate next year.

The Spartans felt they were prepared for this
match, having practiced since November, and it
was tough to lose on the last rock in the end.
They played a good game and called a good
game, said Spartans Coach Michelle Ladene.
Its disappointing but they tried their best.
I think they read the ice pretty well and being
able to call the right shot. I think our skip Jared
(Aschenbrenner) did a very good job at that. Its
just unfortunate they didnt get the shots and he
called the shots I wouldve done and they made a
beautiful shot to win.
It may be the end of the short season for the
boys team, but the girls and mixed categories are
off to zones, and Ladene is confident in what both
teams can do to build off of last years zones.
I think our mixed team is strong, said Ladene.
Cole Burton, the skip, has done a lot of juniors
and competitive curling. Layne Wilson, shes a really good curler, the whole mixed team should be
good curlers. The girls team is almost exactly as
we had last year. We learned a lot and really came
together last year at zones.
Zones take place on Feb. 26-27 in Drumheller,
while Provincials are March 4-5 in Ponoka.

February 9, 2016
Hazel passed away peacefully at
the age of 95 years. Mom was raised on the family farm near Nightingale, AB. After she married Ed
Risdon, they lived in Calgary for a few years before
settling on a farm near Glenmore Trail. Her hobbies
were sewing and gardening, growing flowers both
out in the yard and inside. Mom and Ed restored
dolls and she sewed many outfits for them. Her
dollhouse was moved into town where she continued her hobby. She enjoyed having different groups
come in to view them and chat. Her collection was
quite large when she moved into Sagewood. Left
to cherish her memory are her children, Wayne
(Marilyn), Bonnie (Ken), and Vicki (Nigel); her sister Myrtle; sister-in-law Yvonne (Ted) Stoodley;
grandchildren Tracey, Dallas, Tara, Kelie, Shannon,
and Shelah; and eleven great-grandchildren. She
was predeceased by her husband, Edward and her
siblings Jack, Bill, Ted, and Tom. At Moms request,
no funeral will be held. Donations in Hazels memory may be made directly to Wheatland and Area

Bisons get first round bye

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The CFR Bisons got a glimpse of what
postseason hockey will look like after
playing a couple of desperate Northern
Division opponents who threw everything they had at them to try to earn a
spot in the second season.
The club beat the Leduc Oil Kings 4-2
on Feb. 13, but fell to the MLAC Beverly
Optimists 2-0 on Feb. 14. Despite the
loss they were able to lock up second
place and a first round bye to start the
playoffs.
Bisons general manager Wayne Hansen said the Oil Kings came out hard
and the boys came ready to match the
intensity, and it showed as they found
themselves up 3-0 after two periods.
Leduc got into some penalty troubles
and we scored three power play goals,
which really hurt them, said Hansen.
They took a four minute penalty and
we scored twice on it and had them on
their heels. We took our foot off the gas
a little bit in the third period which was
a great teaching thing for us because
in this league if you dont go hard for
60 minutes you could find yourself in
trouble.
One strong trait for the boys all game
long was when their defensemen were
able to hit the forwards in stride with
tape-to-tape passes, while the forwards
made an impact on the back check.
Hansen added that one thing that
helped the team in coming out with the
win was the ability to refocus and not
panic when Leduc scored two goals.
The credit not only goes to the captains,
but other players for stepping up to rejuvenate the bench with their play.
Tyson Scott, Liam Izyk, Brett Trentham
and Cole Clayton scored in the win.
The game against MLAC had a playoff feel to it as there were quite a few

fans of both teams in attendance to see

a fast-paced, physical contest.
At the end of the day we probably
got out goaltended, said Hansen.
Our guys learned even though you
fight hard sometimes you lose and
theres lessons to be learned in that and
those lessons are plain and simple, that
as long as you keep working hard and
you get your chances you should be alright.
The Bisons are the defending league
champions and they will carry a target
on their backs.
Hansen said they will have discussions with the team about preparation,
but it will be important for them to have
fun and stay loose.
There will be have to be a focus on
being mentally and physically ready to
battle and give it their best when they
step on the ice, especially for those firstyear players who havent experienced
this type of intensity before.
Were really going to rely on our vets
to pull these guys along, said Hansen.
If they see maybe theyre struggling a
little bit mentally, theyll get them refocused. They need to lead by example.
Veteran defenseman Quaid McBean
said the team was in a good mindset
in both games and played as if it was
playoffs in battling, taking hits, blocking
shots and playing physical.
He added that with the bye, it will be
nice to get some rest and practices in
before their first game.
Everybody is excited for this time of
year, said McBean.
Its a different kind of game when it
comes to playoffs. Everybody is battling
that much harder. Everybodys paying
the price. I think every guy in this room
will end up dong that.
Game 1 of Round 2 will be played at
the Strathmore Family Centre on Feb. 24
at 6:30 p.m.

It is with profound sadness that we

announce the passing of Robert
(Bob) Payne on January 29, 2016
at the age of 71. The youngest son
of John Redvers and Zella Payne, Bob was predeceased by his brother Don and is survived by his
sister Doris Stollings (George Tkach) of Red Deer.
Bob leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years,
Shelley, children Tammy and Cory (Tara), grandsons Zach and Chaseton, nephew Bruce Stollings
(Pam), and niece Lynn Manning (Dean).
Born in Trochu, Alberta, on May 22, 1944, Bob
shared the limelight of his home town with a
unique shoe store perhaps the catalyst for his
penchant of sandals with socks later in life. Bob
had great enthusiasm for corny jokes and puns,
always motivated by how big a groan he could
elicit.
A proud central Albertan, he would always remark when passing through Trochu that it was the
place where Zella had a little Payne. Achieving
academic success at an early age - including a
Governor Generals award - Bob had his choice
of career paths. He chose to article at the firm of
McKenzie Sheridan in Red Deer for his Chartered
Accountancy, a designation he carried through the
remainder of his life. After graduation, instead of
pursuing accounting immediately, he fulfilled a
challenge in faith and pursued the gospel calling
by enrolling in Berean Bible College in Calgary.
His bible college training was supported by his accounting profession. Within a couple of years, Bob
then transitioned from accounting to his first pastorate in Hanna, Alberta. Bob continued his parallel careers, changing occasionally over the next 40
years between accounting and pastoring.
No matter where he was at in his profession, he
always stayed close to his passion for sharing the
good news of Jesus. Bob would often recount his
unusual career path by reminding a questioner of
the two certainties in life death and taxes and
that he had a foot planted firmly in both camps.
In his spare time Bobs passion for gardening was
trumped only by a stimulating game of cards, be it
Bridge or Crib a skill he took time to instill with
his grandsons.
Bob died in San Juan, Puerto Rico during one of his
newest-found loves, cruising.
With full confidence in his salvation in Christ, Bobs
family comes together to celebrate Bobs passing
to Jesus loving arms. A memorial service will be
held on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Strathmore Alliance Church (First Avenue and Wheatland
Trail) at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in
Bobs memory are encouraged to be sent directly
to The Mustard Seed (102 11 Ave. SE, Calgary AB,
T2G 0X5). To send condolences, please visit Bobs
obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.
