Coming into Power

There was a time in China where the

Nationalists and the Communists put
their fighting to rest. When Japan tried
to invade China.
But in 1947, China broke out into a
civil war. Between the Nationalists also
known as the Kuomintang and the
Communists parties over the control of
mainland China. The Kuomintang were led
by Chiang Kai-Shek then the Communists
were led by Mao Zedong. The Communist
party won on October 1, 1949 that was
also the same day that Mao Zedong
declared the creation of the Peoples
Republic of China.

Mao Zedong (1893-1976)

Mao was born into a wealthy family of farmers.

He was a soldier during the revolution that
overthrew the Qing Dynasty.
Mao worked at a library with the Cofounder of
the Communist party, Li Dazhao. Which is how he
became involved with the Communist party.
From the slide previous to this he led the
communist party to victory. He also was favored
by most peasants so he became the first
President of China.
Mao Zedong tried to industrialize China and
increase food production, but instead creates a
famine.
Mao Zedong died on September 9, 1976 to
Parkinsons Disease.

The great Leap Forward

The Great Leap Forward

The Great Leap started in 1958, with the goal of

modernizing Chinas economy. Mao Zedong planned to
develop the industrial and agricultural.

This would mean setting up communes, they would have

backyard production plants for steel. Lots of steel
was being produced everything was going well.

Things started to fall apart when communes were being

pushed to produce even more steel. This stretching the
workers to unbelievable levels. Which caused mistakes
and injuries.

So many workers were pulled from the fields to work in

the steel production line. That there was not enough
food for all the workers so many died of starvation.

Mao knew that this was a complete fail and people were
losing favor in him so he started the Great Revolution
to regain power and the peoples favor once again.

The Central Revolution

The Central Revolution

The goal of the of the revolution was to get rid of

the Old Four: old culture, old habits, old customs,
and old ideas.

Mao Zedong created the Red Guards, a group of young

men who would humiliate and punish rebels of the
revolution. But as well as revolutionizing China the
Red Guards destroyed most of Chinese cultural
heritage.

After realizing that this was a bad idea Mao Zedong

came up with the Down to the Countryside movement.
Where young people of China were sent from the city
to the country to learn from peasants. The disbanded
Red Guard members were also sent to the country so
they would not cause so much trouble in the city.

Also there was no schools operating during this time

so their was a whole generation of uneducated people
in China.
