careersincybersecurity.
TheCyberPatriotprogram,whichwascreatedbytheAirForceAssociation,alsoismeanttoinspirestudentsto
learnaboutSTEMscience,technology,engineeringandmathematics.
TeachersatPinecrestHighSchooltoldschoolboardmembersabouttheprogramattheirmeetinginMarch,
accordingtoavideoofthemeeting.TheteacherssaidfourteamsfromPinecrestandonefromNorthMoore
HighSchooltookpartincompetitionsthatfocusedonresolvingcybersecurityvulnerabilitiesinsimulated
situations.
AteamofstudentsinPinecrest'sAirForceJuniorROTCprogramranked45thoutof508JROTCteamsaround
theworld,saidWillowAlstonSocha,amasterSTEMteacheratPinecrest.Otherteamsalsoperformedwell,she
said.
TimothyDye,astudentatPinecrest,wasonthefirstteamthatparticipatedintheCyberPatriotprogramin2013.
Hesaidthatonceheconnectedwithbasiccomputersecurity,hewantedtolearnmore.
"ItdrawsmeintoafuturewhereIcanseemyselfchangingtheworld,"hesaid.
HeidiScribnersaidherson,Ryan,hasdiscoveredthatlearningcanbefun.
"Asaparent,Iappreciatealltheskillsthey'relearning,"shesaid."It'safabulousprogram,andIreallyhopeit
willcontinue."
OtherPinecreststudentsparticipatingintheprogramareJackSullivan,DennisSarsozo,KyleCooper,Aaron
Ott,GarrettUnderwood,SteviePappas,NickWolcottandMcLaneAlston.TheNorthMooreteammembersare
NicholasLuther,NicholasSmithandGarrettKidd.
AlstonSochasaidthestudentswhogointocybersecuritycangetjobswithsalariesstartingat$40,000to
$50,000.Shesaidtheprogramhelpsstudentslearnbyworkingonrealworldproblems.
"ItwasabrilliantideabytheAirForceAssociation,"shesaid.
