of the boxes addresses a different focus for extracting criteria from an assignment. NOTE: You dont need to use all three to determine your criteria.

evidence of performance
from the assignments
requirements
B) Identify key concepts
that students must
demonstrate through
their writing

C) Identify the elements

of writing vital to the
assignment that you
plan to assess

TIPS

FOR

ARTICULATING CRITERIA

After identifying the critical information from the assignment itself, then you need to decide what criteria you plan to assess, the level of performance you
expect for each criterion, and how that level of performance can be demonstrated in a students writing. To help you with this, consider these tips:

Deciding Criteria

select criteria that honestly reflect your approach to assessment and the areas of writing you have emphasized in class
Level of Performance decide on the standard of performance students should be able to achieve given the instruction in the course
Evidence of Performance explain how a student can prove they have achieved that level of performance on that criterion

Working through this kind of critical reflection of your writing assignments will help you to isolate those measureable elements of a students writing that
can be assessed quickly, mapped onto a rubric, and supplemented with focused feedback that helps the student improve in specific areas of writing.
