PASSENGER CABIN DISTRIBUTION
INTRODUCTION
The passenger cabin distribution system receives conditioned air
from the main distribution ducts and distributes this air to the passenger cabin.
DESCRIPTION
The airflow for the passenger cabin passes through the cold/hot air
distribution valves. These valves will permit the cold air to flow to the
cold air ducts and the hot air to flow to the hot air ducts. Downstream
of the air distribution valves the air flows to the upper or lower ducts.
All the mixed air from the right ECU goes to the passenger cabin.
The passenger cabin distribution system has these components:
Air distribution valves.
Thermal switch.
Mufflers.
Ground connection valve.
Air ducts.
The figure PASSENGER CABIN DISTRIBUTION - MAIN
COMPONENT LOCATIONS shows the location of the main
components of the system.

THERMAL SWITCH
The thermal switch controls the two air distribution valves. When one
valve opens, the other closes. The switch is hermetically sealed,
single-pole, single-throw, and operates the valves at 24oC (75oF).
This switch also sets the right recirculation fan (Ref. 21-24) speed to
high or low.
MUFFLERS
The mufflers absorb the noise of the air coming from the packs and
the fans. They have a flexible duct with flexible porous interior,
externally covered with a 0.5 in-thick layer of sound absorbent material.
The figure THERMAL SWITCH AND MUFFLERS - LOCATION
shows the location of the thermal switch and mufflers.

AIR DUCTS
The passenger cabin upper and lower ducts supply uniform air
distribution along the cabin.
The cross sectional area of the lower ducts is constant along the
cabin. The cross sectional area of the upper ducts changes in the
interface between the upper ducts and main ducts to reduce air
velocity.
The ducts are modular honeycomb plates with low thermal conductivity. They are installed at the overhead bin panel (upper ducts) and at
the dado panel (lower ducts).

upper and lower air outlets.

OPERATION
All the mixed air from the right ECU goes to the passenger cabin.
The airflow from the right ECU and recirculation fan (Ref. 21-24) flows
through the air distribution valves, going to the upper or lower ducts.
If the temperature is less than 24oC (75oF), the air flows to the cold air
ducts. If the temperature is more than 24oC (75oF), the air flows to the
hot air ducts. The thermal switch installed upstream of the air distribution valves makes the selection between cold and hot ducts.
NOTE: The air distribution valves do not fully close to prevent high
air speed in the distribution ducts.
Each module of the upper ducts has drains to prevent water
condensation from collecting in the ducts. The drain tubes connect to
the lower part of the fuselage between the insulation and the liner,
near the fuselage drains.
Air passages in the floor (on each side of the passenger cabin) permit
the air to return to the recirculation fans and to the outflow valves.
The figure PASSENGER CABIN DISTRIBUTION SCHEMATIC
shows the operation of the system.
