Councilmember Scott Sherman will push for support of an Urban Agriculture Initiative at a meeting with community garden advocates. The initiative, if approved by City Council, would provide tax reductions for property owners who agree to have community gardens on their land for 5 years, in order to reduce blighted properties and encourage urban agriculture. At the meeting, Councilmember Sherman will ask advocates to contact the mayor and city council members to vote in favor of the measure, which will be considered on February 29th. The meeting will be held on February 24th from 4-6pm at the Bayside Community Center.

Push for Support of Urban Agriculture Initiative If approved by Council, Program would Reduce Blight and Encourage Community Gardens SAN DIEGO The San Diego Food System Alliance has organized a workshop for community members interested in learning about Urban Agricultural Incentive Zones and discuss outreach and mobilization strategies to pass Urban Agriculture Incentive Zones in other cities similar to Councilmember Shermans measure that will be considered at City Council on February 29th. This new program would provide communities throughout the City an economic tool to incentivize the development of community gardens on eyesore properties. An Urban Agriculture Incentive Zone reduces the property tax of a participating parcel owner in exchange for a minimum five year contract for the usage of the site for urban agriculture. The program will help reduce vacant, blighted properties throughout the City. At the meeting, Councilmember Sherman will ask advocates to contact the Mayor and City Council and urge them to vote in favor of the measure. When:
