HALOGEN TUNGSTEN

LAMP

How it
Works

The lamp is turned on and the filament

begins to glow red as more current
passes through it. The temperature rapidly
increases. The halogens boil to a gas at
relatively low temperatures

The Halogen cycle

Normally tungsten atoms evaporate off of

the filament and deposit on the inside of
the bulb, this blackens normal
incandescent lamps.
As atoms leave the filament the filament
gets thinner. the tungsten atoms
chemically unite with the halogen gas
molecules and when the halogen cools,
the tungsten is redeposited back on the
filament.

Halogen Process
When a halogen
lamp is turned on,
tungsten particles
evaporate from
filament and attach
on to bulb wall. At
the same time,
halogen is
decomposed and
becomes atomic
halogen.

As the tungsten get re-deposited

on the filament, the halogen gas
is released and ready to combine
again, creating the halogen
regenerative cycle process.

.Atomic halogen is
diffused on the bulb w
and combines with free
tungsten particle to
become transparent an
volatile tungsten halid

As the tungsten
halide
approaches the
filament the
tungsten and the
halogen gas
separate and the
tungsten gets redeposited on the
filament.

Parts of The Lamp.

MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF A

HALOGEN LAMP.

Tungsten Filament: Which provides Light When Heated

Gas: halogen gas usually bromine or iodine.
Bulb: made of quartz to withstand high temperatures.
Molybdenum Foil: used as a conductor to ensure the
hermetic dealing of the lamp. It enables the filament to
operate at higher temperatures.

Applications And Uses

Tungsten-halogen lamps have been commonly

used as the light sources in automobile

Halogen lamps are used as the

heating element in ahalogen oven.

Tungsten halogen lamps are used in the majority of theatrical

and studio (film and television) fixtures, includingEllipsoidal
reflector spotlights, Source Four, andFresnels.
