Teaching phonics for grade 1 students

Grade 1
Lesson name: Phonics (a, b, c, & d)
Duration: 55 minutes
Objective: At the end of the session, students should be able to
pronounce the sound of the letters in the alphabets (a, b, c, & d).
Strategy: Centers
Materials: Podcast, Interactive PowerPoint presentation,
printable worksheet, pictures sheet, alphabet sheet, blank sheets
of paper, evaluation sheets.
Warm up:
- Display alphabet pictures sheet on LCD.
- Tell the students that they are going to listen to a podcast
(explain what a podcast is).
- Listen to the podcast twice.
- Ask students to try and sing it (They might look at the
pictures displayed).
- Tell the students to listen carefully one more time because
they are going to pronounce the sound of each letter on the
board.
- Have students pronounce the sound of each letter.
Activity:
- Open Interactive PowerPoint presentation.
- Read the directions for the students.
- Choose students to say the name of the picture and choose
the correct beginning sound letter.
- Have students reread the name of the picture (word).
Center 1:
- Print out worksheet 1.
- Cut the cards.

- Read the directions for the students.


Center 2:
- Give students blank sheets of paper.
- Have students draw a picture of something that starts with
a sound.
Center 3:
- Give students blank sheets of paper.
- Have students draw a picture of something that starts with
b sound.
Center 4:
- Give students blank sheets of paper.
- Have students draw a picture of something that starts with
c sound.
Center 5:
- Give students blank sheets of paper.
- Have students draw a picture of something that starts with
d sound.
Evaluation:
- Printout evaluation sheet.
