Most conform to metric standards developed by Standards Com- mittee B-27 of the American National Standards Ins! tute (ANSI), U.S. representative to the International Stan- dards Organization. (ISO is the world body responsible for establishing uniform metric standards for all countries.) The ANSI metric ring standards incorporate basic Tru- are design principles and ring dimensions. Asa result, multi- national manufacturers currently specifying Truare inch rings will be able to use the standards and switch to Truarc metric rings, in most cases with either no changes or only minor changes in product design or groove dimensions. Only exception is the Truarc Metric Series 11-410 Crescent ring, which retains the same design featuresasitsinch series, but is now offered in sizes to assure wider application on standard motric-size shafts, The new sizes are identical in dimension, except for thickness, with Crescent rings made in Europe, which were produced originally under Waldes Kohinoor patent licenses, Truarc Rings Offer You A Superior Design There are significant functional differences between Tru- arc metric retaining rings ang rings canforming to German DIN, British BS, Japanese JIS or other regional metric stan- dards. The DIN standards were adopted in 1941 and have served as a madel for most of the others. Except for minor revisions, the 1941 data have never been changed. But retain- ingring technology has changed and Truarc rings incorpor- ate many important improvements: * Truarc Series 10-100 basic internal rings are generally thinner and have larger free diameters and gap widths They are designed to be seated tightly in deeper grooves and provide substantially higher thrust-load capacity. * Both Truare Series 10-100 and 11-100 basic internal and external rings are dimensioned to maintain a uniform ratio of approximately 3% between groove depth and bore or shaft diameter. The ratio varies between dif- ferent size rings in otherstandards. The constant Truarc ratio assures optimum thrust-load capacity regardless of shaft or bore size, TRUARC RETAINING RINGS DIVISION. * Truarc Series 11-160 heavy-duty rings were designed especially for assemblies in which the retaining ring would be subjected to unusually heavy loading condi- tions or where the retained part has a large corner radius or chamfer. They provide a pre-stressed, high-shoulder ring seated ina deep groove—a combination of features not available in DIN heavy-duty rings. # Truarc Series 11-420 E-rings maintain a ratio of approx- imately 10% between groove depth and shaft diameter. This assures a uniform balance between adequate thrust capacity and shaft strength. For DIN E-rings, this ratio ranges from 3% to 19%. The smaller ratios reduce thrust capacity; the larger weaken the shaft considera- bly, reduce the ring’s shoulder height and make it dif- ficult to machine the groove. ‘+ Truare Series 11-430 reinforced E-rings were developed for assemblies in which conventional E-type fasteners do nat provide the necessary gripping power to resist radial push-out forces. They can take up larger groove diameter tolerances and can withstand higher rpm's than conventional E-rings. There are no DIN standards for the series. Truare Rings Are More Economical— Easier to Assemble The basic Truarc design permits accurate, high-speed stamping with functionally acceptable tolerances. The extra thickness of DIN and other regional metric rings adds to their cost and makes it more difficult to install and remove the rings. Because DIN rings provide lower thrust capacity, they ‘cannot be substituted in products designed for Truarc rings. Substitutions would necessitate larger shafts and housings with significant increases in material costs and over-all prod- Uct size and weight ... in short, an entirely different design concept not nearly as good as what American engineers have had available for more than 30 years. AXIALLY-INSTALLED RINGS Data Charts: Pages 6, 8, 10 and 12 easic Interna’ Series 40-100. HEAVY Gury Extemal Serves ‘14-160 Series 10-100 basic internal rings are compressed for in- sertion into a bore or housing; Series 11-100 external rings are expanded over a shaft. Both types maintain constant pressure against the bottom of the groove and are secure against heavy thrust loads. With a few exceptions for design considerations, groove depths for these rings increase as the bore or shaft size increases. Since the groove in most ap- plications is the weakest element in the assembly, a cons- tantly increasing groove depth, combined with a ring of appropriate thickness, strengthens the assembly by rein- forcing its weakest link. Series 11-100 rings, often used in assemblies subjected to strong centrifugal forces, also are secure against high rotational speeds. (Rotational speeds are of no consequence with Series 10-100 rings, since cen- trifugal forces merely cause the rings to seat tighter against the groove bottom.) Bath rings have holes in the lugs for rapid installation an¢ removal with Truarc pliers. Serias 11-160 heavy-duty rings provide higher thrust-load capacity than the basic external type and, because of their WALDES KOHINOOR, INC., Long Island City, N.Y. 11101 increased section height, can be used to secure parts having extra-large corner radii or chamfers. The heavy-duty rings are substantially thicker than the basic rings and have higher and wider lugs which extend farther into the body, providing greater contact area and more uniform load distribution against the retained part. The lug design offers another advantage: it compensates for the ring's increased maximum, section height, providing better dynamic balancing under high rpm. The Series 11-160 requires only nominally greater clearance than the basic external ring. RADIALLY-INSTALLED RINGS Data Charts: Pages 14, 16 and 18 EAING CHESCENT® ExtemnalSerios | External Senos 1-410 11-820 ‘The Series 11-410 Crescent ring has a tapered section similarto that of the basic axially-assembled rings. The taper ison the inner surface of the ring facing the groove, however, so that the fastener provides a uniform shoulder concentric tothe shaft. When the ringis installedon ashaft it undergoes circular deformation and, as a consequence, maintains a tight fit against the bottom of the groove. Because of its narrow section height and uniform shoulder, the ring is ideal for radial assemblies in which clearance dimensions are critical. Series 11-410 rings are secure against moderate impact and vibration. The Series 11-420 E-ring is designed to provide a large shoulder on small-diameter shafts. Three heavy prongs, spaced approximately 120° apart, provide contact surface with the bottom of the groove. The radius of the bending armsis considerably larger than the radius of the shaft and a relatively deep groove is used to increase the fastener’s thrust load capacity. Groove depth is approximately 10% of shaft diameter for this series; shoulder diameter varies from approximately twice the shaft diameter for smaller sizes to ‘4 times shaft diameter for larger sizes, decreasing in uni- form manner. These ratios have proven to be the most popular for vast quantitiesof Truarc E-rings used in industry for many years. The relatively deep groove, however, is not so deep as to affect shaft strength in relation to the thrust, load capacity of the groove itself. ‘The Series 11-430 reinforced E-ring is designed for assem- blies where conventional E-rings do not provide the necess- ary holding power. The ring has approximately five times greater resistance to radial push-out forces than standard E- Tings of the same metal and thickness and is secure against heavy vibration and shock loads. It can accommodate large corner radii or chamfers without separate washers and is, secure against high rotational speeds or relative rotation between the retained parts, (The Series 11-430 has approx- imately 50% higher rpm limits than conventional E-rings.) Because recommended groove tolerances are larger than those specified for standard E-rings, machining grooves for the Series 11-430 is less expensive. (The increased groove tolerances have no effect on ring performance: the fasteners function with complete safety in the specified groove dimen- sions.) Series 11-430 rings are assembled radially in the same way as conventional E-rings MATERIALS Standard material is carbon spring steel (SAE 1060-1090), designated by Truarc Code Number 1. Exceptions are Series 11-100 in sizes -0040, -0050 and -0060, and Series 11-420- 0010, which are available only in beryllium copper (Alloy #25, CDA #172), Truare Code 3. All orders for special thickness Tings are subject to prior inquiry and quotation. FINISHES ‘Standard finish for unplated carbon spring steel rings is a black, Corrosion-retardant phosphate coating designated by the Truare Code Number 00, Beryllium copper rings are supplied without any additional finish. Stainless steel rings are passivated. The Finish Code for both copper and stainless stee! rings is Number 99, Zinc plating with a dichromate dip (Finish Code 20) is available for rings made of carbon spring steel or beryllium copper. Note: The standard minimum plating thickness for zinc Is 0.0075 mm, For all zinc-plated rings, the standard plating thickness will be supplied unless a specific plating thickness Is indicated on the Order. Prices for non-standard plating thickness are available on request. LOAD CAPACITIES STATIC THRUST LOADS 1. Allowable Thrust Loads—Rings (Pr and P’r) Maximum allowable static thrust load capacities for rings normally used with grooves are listed in the data charts for each ring type. The load limits are given for rings (Pr or P'r) and grooves (Pq). The valves for Pr or P’rare applicable only when the ring is, installed in a housing or on a shaft made of a material where the thrust load capacity of the groove is equal to or greater than that of the ring, When the ring is seated ina groove cut in other materials and Pg is/ess than Pror P’r, then Pg becomes, the limiting factor in the assembly. For maximum thrust capacity in both static and dynamic. loading, the abutting face of the retained part should have a square corner. Fit of the retained part in the housing or on a shaft should allow reasonably concentric uniform loading against the ring, The values of Pr apply only to standard thickness rings made of standard materials having the ultimate shear strength listed in Table 1 below. Allowable Thrust Loads—Grooves (Pg) ‘The allowable thrust loads listed in column Pg of the data charts for rings used in grooves are based upon a housing or shaft material of cold rolled steel with a tensile yield strength of 315 MPa, When the following materials are used, multiply the al- lowable thrust load of the groove by the Conversion factor shown below: Tensile Yield | Conversion | Groove Material Strength (MPa) Factor fiestas ith (MPa) Hardened Stee! Ifthe abutting face of the retained part has a corner radius or chamfer, the assembly's thrust load capacity will be lower. Maximum allowable corner radii and chamters for each fing size are listed in the charts with corresponding static thrust capacities. For axially-assembled Series 10-100, 11-100 ‘and 11-160 rings, in most cases Rmax corresponds to the comer radii of 200 and 300 Series ball bearings, with which TRUARC RETAINING RINGS DIVISION If the thrust capacities listed for Rmax or Chmax are not sufficient for the assembly, a Truare Series 5800 support washer or rigid square-cornered flat washer should be in- serted between the ring and the part. The thrust capacity of the assembly then will be approximately the same as if a square-cornered retained part had been used. ‘When the actual corner radius or chamfer is less than the listed maximum, the allowable thrust load of the assembly increases proportionately in accordance with the following formulas: R (for radius) (for chamfer) Allowable assembly load when corer radius or chamfer is fess than listed maximum isted allowable assembly load with maximum corner radius or chamfer Aimax, = Listed maximum allowable corner radius A= Actual corner radius Chmax, = Listed maximum allowable chamfer ‘Ch = Actual chamfer NOTE: If the allowable thrust load capacity of the ring (Pr) or the groove (Pg) is less than P”;, Pr or Pg—whichever is lower—becomes the limiting factor in the assembly. DYNAMIC THRUST LOADS ‘The dynamic loading conditions most often encountered in retaining ring assemblies are sudden loading, cyclic load- ing, impact and vibration. Where cyclic or fatigue loading will be encountered, actual tests of the application are necess- ary. For information on sudden loads, impact and vibration, ‘contact Waldes Kohinoor, Inc. ASSEMBLY TOOLS Truarc Metric Series 10-100, 11-100 and 11-160 rings can be assembled and disassembled rapidly with standard Truare pliers which grasp the rings securely by the lugs. Pliers for Internal Series 10-100 rings compress the fasteners for inser- tion or removal in a bore or housing; pliers for external Series 11-100 and 11-160 rings expand the rings for assembly and disassembly over a shaft, Truare convertible pliers may be used for both internal and external rings, merely by changing the setting of the pivot pin, Truare Metric Series 11-410 Crescent rings, 11-420 E-rings and 11-430 reinforced E-rings are designed for fast, econom- ical assembly with Truarc applicators and dispensers.
