What is DNA?

Functions

What is DNA Harvesting?

Extracting and storing DNA from living
organisms like plant and animals.
Mainly used for the purpose of altering,
storing for future or studying DNA
structure of different living organisms.
Helps in creating the genome database of
all the species of living organisms in the
world.
Recent applications, forensic
identification of human remains.

Popular DNA Harvesting

Methods
Anion-exchange.
-Solid-phase, anion-exchange
chromatography.
Silica-membrane technology.
-Selective adsorption to silica membranes.
Magnetic-particle technology.
-Binding to magnetic silica particles under
controlled ionic conditions.

DNA analysis for

identification
Methods like DNA profiling are being used
in forensic science to identify criminals,
and victims by their human remains.
Humans share 99% of the DNA sequence
with one another, but the 1% is enough
to distinguish each person.
DNA profiling was developed by Prof. of
Genetics Sir Alec Jeffreys.

DNA analysis for

identification (Contd.)
Process starts with collection reference
sample like cheek swab, blood, saliva or
any other appropriate fluid or tissue.
These samples are analysed using
techniques like RLFP analysis, PCR
analysis etc.
These techniques can genetic family
relationships such as paternity,
maternity, siblingship and other kinships.

DNA Database
DNA database, is a national database of
DNA profiles which can be used by law
agencies to identify criminals.
USA has the worlds largest DNA database
of criminals and suspects.
Human DNA Profiling Bill 2015 has been
introduced in the India for the purpose of
creating DNA database, but because of
privacy concerns its still on the floor of
the parliament.
