Visual impairment

IDEA Definition:
According to IDEA, visual impairment
including blindness means an impairment in
vision that, even with correction, adversely affects a childs
educational performance. The term includes both partial sight and
blindness.
Characteristics:
Blurring of vision
Loss of a part of the visual field (e.g. central vision)
Difficulty maintaining a steady gaze and coordinated eye
movements
A cognitive problem understanding what is seen
Color blindness
Manifestations:
Crossed eyes
Overly clumsy
Short attention span with
information
Blink frequently
Students may be squinting
often during instruction
Sensitive to bright lights
Poor eye-hand coordination
Lazy eyes
Poor academic performance
