Instructional Design Process

The entire instructional design process has been a real eye opener. I have discovered many strategies
and techniques I can implement in a face to face and virtual environment. One strategy that I would like
to implement is Learning Labs. A learning lab is an environment that provides tools and educational
support to enable learners to explore content at their own pace. I envision setting up stations and/or
virtual groups in which learners can collaborate on various professional development topics.
Storyboard Component
The Storyboard assisted me with lessons and objectives organized and confirming that they connected
with the core course. Constructing the Storyboard allowed me to construct the assessments and
scenarios with ease. Creating a flowchart allowed me to connect the dots and create a foundation for
my learning modules. It also gave me visual on how the workflow and learning objectives should be
met. After obtaining a deep understanding of what role each activity played, plugging it into the chart
was seamless.
Usability Test
I learned that usability testing is the best way to understand how real users experience your learning
modules or application. Unlike interviews or focus groups that attempt to get users to accurately selfreport their own behavior or preferences, a well-designed user test measures actual performance on
mission-critical tasks. The testing allowed me to make changes to how the material and user options
were made available to the learner.
SCORM Compliant RLO
Developing the material was not difficult, but making sure that everything was complaint took a lot of
attention to detail. Adding ALT tags and audio really required extra time and commitment to complete
effectively.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

I added this because this is very important to keep in mind while designing any learning platform. UDL is
designed to serve all learners, regardless of ability, disability, age, gender, or cultural and linguistic
background. UDL provides a blueprint for designing goals, methods, materials, and assessments to reach
all students including those with diverse needs. I realized that this is not only beneficial for the learners,
but also gives facilitators the opportunity to engage learners with cooperative learning and hands-on

activities. It builds movement into learning and gives learners the opportunity to absorb information
more effectively through their preferred learning methods.
My particular project topic offers an online option allowing flexibility but incorporating a face to face
component which gives and opportunity for clarity on anything that may have been misinterpreted in
the online component. The face to face component will allow the learner to ask questions on material
that may be perceived as a challenge to digest. This will also a platform for the facilitator to engage the
learner with assigned tasks to reinforce and/or implement the strategies in real-time.
Future Plans
I will continue to find ways to incorporate what Ive currently learned in my current working
environment. I will seek out creative ways to keep learners engaged through the instructional design
and development.
