When Socrates was in prison he was given a choice whether to stay in prison and die or

to leave prison and live in exile. Crito tries to persuade Socrates to leave not only to save
himself but because it would make the people happy as well. In the end however, Socrates
chooses to stay in prison and dies. If I were Socrates I would have left the prison and lived in
exile.
I would have left the prison and lived in exile because it would have produced the most
utility for me. The "principle of utility states that actions or behaviors are right in so far as they
promote happiness or pleasure." If I left the prison, I do not think I would have done something
unjust because I am not harming anybody. Escaping prison can be seen as "right" according to
WD Ross. According to WD Ross the "view that what produces the maximum pleasure is right
and that what produces the maximum good is right, and that pleasure is the only thing good in
itself." In other words, escaping the prison would have caused me to keep my life and enjoy the
world, causing me a great deal of happiness, and if I stayed in the prison, I would have died
causing me a great deal of sadness. Since leaving prison brings about the most amount of
happiness for me, it is the "right" thing to do.
