Rewarding creativity: when does it really matter?


The article examines the relationship between employee creativity and extrinsic
rewards and finds out that two conditions which are employee job complexity and
employee cognitive style affect this relationship. Individuals with adaptive cognitive
style and simple jobs had a direct ratio between job creativity and extrinsic rewards
whereas employees with innovative cognitive styles and complex jobs had a weak
relationship between rewards and creativity. It further shows that those with
adaptive cognitive style but complex jobs had negative relationship between
creativity and rewards as well as those with adaptive style and complex jobs.

241 employee peer pairs were taken as sample space. The effect of intrinsic and
extrinsic rewards on creativity is studied. Intrinsic rewards regardless of their degree
of importance exerted a significant positive impact on creativity whereas extrinsic
rewards encouraged creativity as long as they are regarded as important by the
individual. The article discusses the underlying mechanisms behind these findings.

A sample of a combination of 181 people comprising of employees and supervisors
were studied. The studied proposed that extrinsic rewards in effect increase the
intrinsic motivation of employees thus increasing creativity. It also suggests that
employee self-efficacy plays an important role when the effects of intrinsic rewards
are studied against creativity and this also suggests the variations in individual
behaviors.

Utilitarianism or romanticism: The effect of rewards on employees


innovative behavior
A quantitative approach is chosen for the analysis of 241 individuals. Extrinsic
rewards such as pay and recognition affect the innovative attitude of employees in
an inverse U shape. Intrinsic rewards have substantial positive impact on creative
behavior and extrinsic rewards combine with intrinsic rewards to foster an
innovative workplace together. The study focuses on the materialistic incentives
approach or an intangible intrinsic and their interactive effects on individual
innovative behaviors.
