The word family refers to a group of two or more people who are closely
related by biological, sexual, adoptive, or strong psychological and
emotional bonds and who regularly share resources and interact with one
another, ideally in an atmosphere of affection, acceptance, intimacy,
support, and trust. Families exist in some form in every society of the world;
everyone begins life and most remain throughout life members of some kind
of family.
An Italian banking family, political dynasty and later royal house that first
began to gather prominence under Cosimo de' Medici in the Republic of
Florence during the late 14th century. As a family of bankers, the Medicis
helped establish a currency system that could be used to buy art and
products from Italy or around the world. The family originated in the Mugello
region of the Tuscan countryside, gradually rising until they were able to
fund the Medici Bank. The bank was the largest in Europe during the 15th
century, seeing the Medici gain political power in Florence though
officially they remained citizens rather than monarchs.
A famous city in Italy known for its history: a center of medieval European
trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, it is
considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, and has been called "the
Athens of the Middle Ages". A turbulent political history includes periods of
rule by the powerful Medici family, and numerous religious and republican
revolutions. From 1865 to 1871 the city was the capital of the recently
established Kingdom of Italy.
A period in Europe, from the 14th to the 17th century, considered the bridge
between the Middle Ages and modern history. It started as a cultural
movement in Italy in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of
Europe, marking the beginning of the Early Modern Age.
A city-state is a sovereign state that consists of a city and its dependent
territories. Historically, this included famous cities like Rome, Athens,
Carthage, and the Italian city-states during the Renaissance (Florence)but
today only a handful of independent city-states exist, with some
disagreement as to which are city-states.
Since Italy was not a united country, instead existing as many city-states,
Florence, Venice, and others competed with one another to see who could
create the best art or scholarship.
