MORTAR, GROUT

AND PLASTER
CE

MORTAR
- is a mixture of cementitious material, aggregate and water.
-can classified as cement-lime mortar, cement mortar or cement
masonry mortar

Functions
- Bonding masonry units together.
-serving as a seating material for the units.
-leveling and seating the units
-providing aesthetic quality of the structure

4 types of Mortar
M- highest strength mortar (minimum 2500 psi) and should only be used
where significant compressive strength is required
S- medium-strength mortar (minimum 1800 psi). it can be used for belowgrade exterior walls and other exterior projects like patios
N-Type N is the most common type of mortar and is the best all-around
selection unless special characteristics are required. It is medium strength
(minimum 750 psi) and is meant for reinforced interior and above-grade
exterior load-bearing walls
Type O mortar is a low strength mortar (minimum 350 psi) that is used in
non-load-bearing interior applications. It is easy to work with so it is often
used to repair mortar where the wall is structurally sound

GROUT
- is a high-slump concrete consisting of Portland cement, sand, fine
gravel, water and sometimes lime.
- it is used to fill the core or voids in hollow masonry units for
(1) bonding the masonry units, (2) bonding reinforced steel to the
masonry (STRUCTURAL GROUT) (3)increasing the bearing area,
(4) increasing fire resistance (5)improving overturning resistance by
increasing the weight. The minimum compressive strength of grout
is 14 MPa (2000 psi0 at 28 days ( ASTM C476)

Plaster
Is a fluid moisture of Portland cement, lime, sand and water.
- it is used for finishing either masonry walls or framed walls.
- exterior or interior
-Stucco is plaster used to cover exterior walls
-the avg. compressive strength of plaster is about 13.8 MPa
(2000psi)
