Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions
to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. MT with seriously mentally ill clients is a psychotherapeutic method that uses musical interaction as a means of communication and expression. The aim of therapy is to help people with mental illness, including serious mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia or like illnesses) to develop relationships and to address issues they may not be able to using words alone. MT sessions include the use of active music making, music listening, and discussion. MT includes both individual and group therapy.
