WATI Assistive Technology Consideration Guide

1. What task is it that we want this student to do, that they are unable to do
at a level that reflects their skills/abilities (writing, reading, communicating,
seeing, hearing)? Document by checking each relevant task below. Please
leave blank any tasks that are not relevant to the students IEP.
2. Is the student currently able to complete tasks with special strategies or
accommodations? If yes, describe in Column A for each checked task.
3. Is there available assistive technology (either devices, tools, hardware, o
software) that could be used to address this task? (If none are known,
review WATIs AT Checklist.) If any assistive technology tools are currently
being used (or were tried in the past), describe in Column B.
4. Would the use of assistive technology help the student perform this skill
more easily or efficiently, in the least restrictive environment, or perform
successfully with less personal assistance? If yes, complete Column C.

Reflection
1. One point I found very much overlooked by many teachers is that they
should be part of the implementation team. Teachers provide valuable
data and are the key facilitator in the classroom. Teachers should learn

how to use the AT, as well as, how to implement use in the classroom.
Teachers should also be aware of the Point of Contact for any
additional questions. Most importantly, teachers should understand
that it is not an option but a necessity and not accommodating the
student could lead to legal ramifications.
2. The school is responsible for:
- Evaluating needs of the student
- Buying, leasing, etc. the AT
- Selecting the correct AT
- Coordinating Services
- Providing training and tech support
3. Teachers should be aware of the requirements and implementation plan.
Coordinate with and be part of the implementation team. Learn how to use
the AT so that teachers understand the purpose so that he or she can meet
the needs in planning lessons and activities.

What have I done differently? Well, it is Summer Session so I have not

done anything differently. However, when school starts I will make sure
I understand the AT device and implement it in the classroom as
needed.
Questions? No, I really feel the module answered my questions.
