What is Habitat For Humanity-Spokane?

Habitat for Humanity-Spokane was founded in 1987 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity
International. Since the day we finished our first home in 1988 our entire mission and vision has been
anchored around our dedication to ending the cycle of poverty housing. We believe that everyone
deserves a safe, decent, and affordable place to live and grow. Together with help of the Spokane
community, we build hope, communities, and homes.
Most people know Habitat through our new home construction program where we raise money for
materials and qualifying low-income families work off a down payment with a little cash and a lot of
hard work, which we like to call sweat equity. Each family contributes 500 hours of their own labor along
with volunteers and staff to not only build their own home but, offer their hand in their community. The
homes are sold to partner families at cost with a 0% mortgage held by Habitat-Spokane.
We look at our partnerships as not a hand out, but a hand up to empower Spokane families. Community
support keeps our building expenses low, lowering the cost for our partner families.
To this day, with the support of the community, Habitat for Humanity-Spokane has built over 255 homes
in the Spokane County. These homes help to instill the pride of ownership and support the development
of positive relationships with the community at large. With decent, affordable homeownership, Habitat
families create a solid foundation for a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

What Do We Build?
Houses, of course!
Or housing solutions, the current term for the physical endeavors Habitat for Humanity-Spokane
undertakes: the construction of new single and multifamily houses, as well as the rehabilitation, repair,
and incremental building of existing homes.

But Habitat-Spokane builds so much more than just houses. Our efforts are varied throughout the
community whether it be disaster recovery toolkits and shelters, weatherization efforts, water and
sanitation projects, housing microfinance systems, and the maintenance of schools and community
building are all part of our efforts to bring the community of Spokane together.
We build the mind and spirit of the community, being an ecumenical Christian-ministry. Thriving
relationships among friends, families, and all faiths bring us closer to everyone a decent place to live. We
don't build for anyone, we build with them. We work together to come to a solution to not only build a
house but to create a home through the grace of God and come closer to building a different, better
world.

We rely on the generosity and dedication of our community for funding, materials, time, and effort to
build decent, affordable homes for people in need.

OUR MISSION:
Habitat for Humanity-Spokane is an ecumenical nonprofit Christian ministry dedicated to bringing the
community together to build decent, affordable housing for all Gods people in need. Habitat-Spokane is
an equal housing opportunity provider and serves qualified families from all walks of life regardless of
creed.

OUR VISION:
Habitat for Humanity-Spokane will partner with community members of Spokane, including other
affordable housing providers, ethnic and minority communities and low-income families to raise the
standards of housing. HfH-Spokane will provide hope, stability and dignity for families in partnership
while building our community through quality homeownership.

ALL ARE WELCOME:

Habitat for Humanity-Spokane has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent,
affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender,
political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Habitat welcomes
volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing
regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity Affiliates do not proselytize.
This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must
either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce
conversion to a particular faith. Habitat for Humanity-Spokane will not work with entities or individuals
who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with Habitat for Humanity-Spokane

each month.
Families are chosen based on three criteria:
1. NEED: The family is now living in inadequate housing (i.e.
subsidized, overcrowded, substandard, etc.) and have an
income that falls between 25-60% of the Spokane area
median income (see below)
2. ABILITY TO PAY: The family must be able to repay the zero
percent interest Habitat loan
3. WILLINGNESS TO PARTNER: The family agrees to
contribute at least 500 hours of "sweat equity" to Habitat
Every affiliate follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family
selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing Habitats
homeowner families.

We advocate for policies

We accept government
