Decibel (dB)
The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit used to express the ratio of two values of a physical
quantity, e.g power or intensity.
The sound intensity I may be expressed in decibels above the standard threshold of hearing I0 .
The expression is

The decibel ( dB) is used to measure sound level, but it is also widely used in electronics.

(dBm)
dBm is an abbreviation for the power ratio in decibels (dB) of the measured power
referenced to one mill watt (mW).
The expression dBm is used to define signal strength in wires and cables at RF and AF
frequencies.
one milliwatt (1 mW) equals 1/1000 of a watt (0.001 W or 10 -3 W).
Then the signal strength in dBm, symbolized SdBm , is:

dBm

= 10 log

(dBW)
The decibel watt or dBW is a unit for the measurement of the strength of a signal expressed
in decibels relative to one watt.
It is used because of its capability to express both very large and very small values of power in a
short range of number; e.g., 1 milliwatt = 30 dBW, 1 watt = 0 dBW, 10 watts = 10 dBW, 100
watts = 20 dBW, and 1,000,000 W = 60 dBW.
