Research project

Correlation between surface treatment and degradation rate of Mg based implant material:

Study of different surface treatments (cleaning and polishing techniques) on biocompatible Mg

materials.

Objective: to validate suitable techniques for sample preparation and analysing.

Systematic investigations of different surface treatments by changing the parameters.

Scientific understanding of the relevant surface parameters and their influence on corrosion.

Analysing the influence of surface roughness on the degradation rate.

Investigation of surface treatments on morphology.

Compare the effect of different surface treatments on corrosion behaviour.

Tasks:

Degreasing samples with alkaline and organic solutions.

Chemical surface treatment (etching, pickling).

Variation of time, concentration and type of solution (organic and inorganic acids).

Surface thicknesses, morphology, chemical composition and microstructural analysis by OM,

SEM, EDX, XRF.

Roughness measurement by Interferometry

Execution of corrosion tests by Immersion test in cell culture medium

Measurement of weight loss, pH and osmolality.
