Charge air cooler maintenance

What is it?

Technical File is a record containing all details of

operating parameters, including components and
settings of an engine that may influence its NOx
emissions and continued compliance
Most engines installed after January 1st 2000 have
Technical Files that must be kept up to date
Used by the regulatory bodies and classification
societies (USCG, TC, ABS, LR) to verify compliance
Affects IAPP certification
The shipowner is responsible for maintaining the
Technical File and having it available for surveyor audit
on demand

Verifying NOx Compliance on board

3 ways to verify, simplest is
Engine Parameter Check method to verify that an
engines component, setting and operating values have
not deviated from the specifications in the engines
Technical File:
1. Check engine parameter
2. Identify NOx related components
3. Record changes to NOx components
4. Identify adjustable features

Must have EIAPP certificate and maintained emissions

compliance since last survey in order to use Engine Parameter
Check Method

Engine Parameter Check Method MaK M43C

Check the following:

1) Adjustments of the valve train

Spacer plates under cam follower brackets (non FCT)

Angle of mini-eccentric bushings (FCT)

2) Identification numbers match MaK listing

3) Piston-cylinder liner height
4) Functioning of FCT if installed
5) Flywheel marking aligned with dead center indicator

Identify NOx related components MaK M43C

Parts procurement traceability

Owners procurement databases (purchase

orders, invoices)
Ships documentation (packing slips, invoices,
etc)
Online www.MyToromont.com (for electronic
copies of Toromont invoices and service reports)
If non-OEM parts without Cat or MaK NOx
markings are used for scheduled maintenance
and repairs the owner is responsible for proving
emissions compliance to the surveyor this is
usually very costly!

Recommendations
Retain detailed records of all maintenance and repair work and parts
purchases for each engine
Follow the published engine maintenance recommendations. Work
with your Cat or MaK dealer on any considered changes to avoid
under/over - repair
Avoid non-OEM parts and repair facilities
Do not change any engine operational settings or modify any
components unless specifically approved by the engine maker
Keep the on-board Technical File current and retain a shore-side copy
Maintain the engine charge-air cooler in accordance with the following
article
Remember that your authorized Cat and MaK dealers are the safest
source of information and assistance on engine emissions - related
issues
