PENINSULA COLLLEGE PRESENTS CABILLITO NEGRO SONGLINES TOUR PROGRAM

FEBRUARY 23, 2016 7:00 PM
Spanish for little black horse, Cabillito Negro consists of
New Zealand Flutist Tessa Brinkman and Percussionist
Terry Longshore. Based out of Oregon, the duo have
embarked on a 5 week college tour. Their musical
repertoire includes a modern and traditional blend, using a
variety of instruments they create something unique and
captivating.

One of the many highlights of the evening was their

inclusion of the arrangement, Music for South Africa (2003),
a piece that was inspired by the music and people of South
Africa. It was written by our very own David P. Jones, a
music teacher at Peninsula College. He introduced the
musicians and spoke of his delight that his music was a part
of the evenings program.

One of their numbers was called the

Metaphysics of Notation (2010) as drawn by
composer, sound-sculpture inventor, and
Stanford Professor, Mark Applebaum. During
this song, a series of highly detailed, handdrawn glyphs were displayed on a screen above
the musicians. As the 70 foot long linear display
scrolled across the screen, the duo played an
interpretive score of the picture.

I very much enjoyed the evening, their musical variances from one song
to another was very moving. They included jazz, eastern styles and
ethic sounds, all in one performance. I had the opportunity to visit with
Tessa after the show and snap a photo.
