The first purpose of an Ident is Re-packaging the channel.

This is to make the channel look


more improved by targeting their audience more effectively. For example, the old BBC
advert used to be boring just a red background with BBC on it. Although now they have
added more detail by putting moving people and animals. This will also make people more
intrigued into the channel.
The second purpose of an ident is, Show the channels Identity. For example, if you didnt
have any adverts before the channel that will be shown you wouldnt have any
understanding on which his going to be happening. This will mean you wont have any
information what is going to be shown on the channel you are watching throughout the day.
For example, In a Sky Sports Ident, it shows what will actually happen in a football game if
your team scores a goal or even wins the league at the end of the match. This is what
makes it show the channels identity.
Another purpose of an ident is, Market the channel, this is the process in which you do to
sell/advertise or promote a product/idea or channel. An example of marketing the channel
is, ITV, for example, some idents may use famous people to promote the channel. On ITV
this is shown as Peter Andre does the Iceland ident just after and before the start of the
programme comes on. A example of the programme is Ima Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.
Another purpose of an ident is, Target a specific audience. For example, the idents on
channel such as, MTV and ITV Be have lots of colours and nightlife themed objects. This
shows that it is appealing to the audience as the watch what is shown on this channel. In
this case programmes shown on these channels are, Geordie Shore and The Only Way Is
Essex, these programmes are aimed for people aged, 16-25 years of age. This appeals to
the audience because; they go partying and also, go clubbing out in the town.
The last ident purpose is, Show type of programming. In this case, if you had an ident
that shows different types of things such as, partying colours and music. It wouldnt be
showing programmes, which involved football or sports such as, basketball. For example,
the ident has to make sure they are showing something that is related to the programme
that is going to be playing on the channel. For example in the ident for the Horror
channels it shows a manikins head blowing up. This is trying to show a sense of horror for
the people that are going to be tuned into the channel.
First Ident:
The BBC hippo ident is an example of all of the ident design features at work. It has a
relatively low level of density of information, For example, visually you can identify the
name of the channel, which is BBC One. It also shows the subtitles of the show and also,
you can see the HD watermark which means, BBC One is also watched in HD. However it
shows people what is going to be on the channel at the time of the ident being shown. For
example, On BBC One the programmes, which are shown, are, Eastenders.
Also the main part of the composition is the circle. It also relates to the circle of the
swimming hippos, which is the circle of the BBC. The circle in the centre of the screen
shows the title in the middle of what is going to be on BBC One. Also it shows the circle in
red as its the colour of BBC, also the blue reflects the water setting. The colours that are
used contrast together, these colours are, Red, Blue and White.
Furthermore in describing and analysing the time & space. This shows that its set
underwater. This shows its set in the "Real World". The time that this is set in as its in the
present day and time. This shows that the programmes that are shown on the channel are
mostly set throughout the daytime or night time. As on the idents it shows, one set during
the day and one set in the night.
Also the tempo is quite slow, the reason for this is because the hippos are swimming slowly
in a circle, which makes the ident quite calming. The music also links with the pace of the
ident. This shows that BBC deals with slow motion indents instead of fast motion, as the
music is slow. On top of this, the BBC One logo slowly transitions in using a circular pattern.
The interaction of the ident is, a males voice. The reason I think a males voice is used is
because, the male population are mostly louder than the women's this shows that men can

get there word across more effectively. However the voice of the males voice is
conversational, so its like youre sitting next to him having a conversation. The males voice
is informing us what is going to be shown on the channel at the time and will also be
displayed whilst hes talking. This feels like he is speaking directly to us in a formal tone.
Lastly the information. vs. Entertainment Led, is that for the information there is very little
on the screen except for the BBC One logo and what is going to been shown next on the
channel. However for the entertainment, it shows hippos swimming in circles to some
people this can be found very interesting as you don't really see hippos everyday. This
means that the programmes that will probably be shown after this ident might be
interesting to watch as it will relate to the ident that was just shown on the screen.
However, it also could be a programme with not as much information being used or shown.
Second Ident:
The Sky Sports ident is an example of all of the ident designs features at work. It has
relativity low level of density of information, For example, you can visually identify the
name of the channel, which is Sky Sports 1. However in the ident you can only see a bit of
the Sky Sports 1 naming, the reason for this is because the characters of, "Jose Mourinho"
and "Manuel Pellegrini", these are coaches for Chelsea FC and Manchester City FC. This
show can also be watched in HD.
The main part of the composition of this ident is that, it relates to Sky Sports as it shows a
Sporting example, which is football. It uses the Red, Blue and White of the Sky Sports sign,
this also relates to the colour of the clothes as they are mainly blue and white, this reflects
of the Sky Sports sign. This will mean people will associate those colours with Sky Sports.
The time & Space of this ident is that its set in the present day and time. As its during the
day as normally football matches are played around 3 o'clock. This also reflects that this
channel shows football as, its mainly used for football matches that are played on Saturday
& Sunday in the Barclays Premiership.
The tempo, of this ident is slow motion as its showing success for Chelsea Football Club.
However normally it would be normal pace tempo but they've made it slow motion to show
the key features in a football game, this also makes the football game seem more
entertaining and epic because your seeing important moments you love in slow motion.
Also the Sky Sports logo gradually comes out from behind the managers and you mostly
see most of it.
Furthermore the interaction to the target audience is a male voice, as normally Sky Sports
is male commentated. This shows that Sky Sports is mainly a watched channel to do with
the male population.
Lastly the Information .VS. Entertainment is that there is a little on screen for information,
however for information is makes you focus on the voice over. Although for the
entertainment of the ident is better, as its showing success in football and if a Chelsea fan
watches the ident they will remember the moment in football history and is more
entertaining.
Third Ident:
The MTV Urban ident, as an example of all of the ident design features at work. it has a
relatively low level of density of information, for example, visually you can identify the
name of the channel which is MTV, this is also watched in HD. However it also says whats
going to be shown on the channel at the time of the ident being shown. For example,
"Geordie Shore" will be shown after the ident is finished.
Also a main part of the composition is the MTV sign. It also relates to every other ident for
MTV as, it is being shown at the end of every ident. However before this is shown there is
random shapes and different objects. Also the colours are bright so it really shows the
channel, as the shows that are shown are interesting and fun to watch. Also the colours
that are used in the ident work together and create a impact on the viewer.

The time and space of the ident is set in the day time, however it is also set indoors and in
the night time. This shows that MTV is played throughout the day and also is on till late at
night. However the time that is mostly set in is the present day and night.
Also the tempo is quite slow but speeds up throughout the ident. The reason for this is
because each of the different objects have to appear and be shown on screen, this shows
that the music can be fast or slow as it varies in different MTV idents. This shows that MTV
deals with both fast and slow motion idents instead of just fast or slow. On top of this, the
MTV logo appears quite fast at the end of each ident.
The interaction of the ident is, quite poor for example; there is no voice over to tell you
what is going to be happening after the ident are being shown. They can improve this by
putting a males voice into the ident, as a males voice is more effective than a womens.
However the reason there might not be a voice over is because it quite a fast tempo ident,
so there might of been enough time to fit it in. However it would of been better to add one
in.
Lastly information. Vs. Entertainment Led, is that for the information there is none being
shown. However for entertainment there are a lot of objects and different things being
used. This shows that the channel will be entertaining more than more information led.
Forth ident:
The ITV 2 ident, Bubble wrap Sumo, is an example of all of the ident designs features at
work. It also has relativity low level of density of information, For example, you can visually
identify the name of the channel, which is ITV 2. The reason why you can identify this is
because it shows up on the ident straight away and is clear to see. This is effective so
people know what channel they are watching.
The main part of the composition of this ident is that, the two bubble wrapped sumo
wrestlers fighting in the middle with the ITV 2 sign appearing next to them. This is a good
composition as, it shows comedy so this means, that the programmes being shown can
have a comedy feel to it or a serious feel. It also uses the main colour red, as its the colour
of the ITV 2 logo, this relates to the colour of the matt they are fighting on and also the
colour of the belt around there waist. This reflects of the ITV 2 sign. This will mean people
will mainly associate Red with ITV 2.
The time & space of this ident is that its set in the present day and time. As its at night
time, as most popular programmes are on ITV 2 around when it gets dark. This shows that
the ident is effective as it makes people want to tune in at the later time when the most
popular programmes are being shown as, it involved a bit of comedy and laughter.
The tempo, of this ident is normal speed as its showing them having fun by, Bubble wrap
Sumo Wrestling, it also shows the key features of fun as, the crowd are being entertained
and its making them laugh and cheer, this reflects that it has a comedy side to the
channel. The ITV 2 logo also appears as its being shown on the ITV 2 channel.
Furthermore the interaction to the target audience is a women voice, this is well suited to
this ident as its two women in the, bubble wrap sum wrestling suits, are fighting so it
reflects the ident very well.
Lastly the Information .VS. Entertainment is that there is a little bit of information shown on
screen for example; it was only the ITV 2 logo being shown. However for not having a lot of
information shown on the screen it allows you to focus on the voice over and what the
women is saying. Although for the entertainment part of the ident it is much better, as it
showing two women having fun fighting in bubble wrap sumo suits.
